My first Emerson

How is the bevel edge on yours?

I don't know the angle, sorry.

My sharpening "baby steps" have always gone badly, so I take my knives to a professional sharpener (one who works on high-end knives, and uses different methods for different knives).

Dadpool-great catch! I got my first Emerson from a friend, one of the Benchmade collabs, back in the late 90's and carried it non-stop for years. The serrations are all but worn off, which is fine as I no longer love them like I did 20 or so years ago. I would love to get some different models, aside from my A-100, but as always money's tight (sound of tiny violin playing) left you a VM, and forgot to mention a friend of mine owns a comic shop in Bellingham, WA. Enjoy that puppy and talk to your sharpening guy about his opinion on a zero edge on the 7.
Thanks, Neal

Thanks! A month in, it's still sharp enough to surprise me, but when it eventually needs sharpening I'll have a conversation with my sharpening guy about the edge profile. :)

Hah! One day after slicing my thumb, making it so I can't open my Emerson with the disk for at least a few more days, my Pete Gray (Gray Precision) monster thumbdisk arrived. ;)

I emailed Pete and asked him which disk most closely matched the factory disk in appearance, and he said the bead-blasted zirconium was the ticket, so that's what I went with. I don't think I've ever owned anything made of zirc before -- I'm surprised how light it is, weight-wise.

Very nice new thumb disk! I have the orange-peel finished zirconium one for my A-100 on my "next" list. I hope the healing is going well.

Let us know your thoughts once the install is finished :)

Congrats on the Pete Gray Monster thumb disk. I LOVE mine.

Yours looks sharp in green!

I haven't installed mine yet. My thumb is healing nicely, but the scab is right where I hit the disk and I don't want to start over. ;)

Thank you! You don't need the disk to open it, you have the wave! ;) :D Install that baby, and wave that baby open! It IS easy to do.

I got my Pete Gray monster thumbdisk (bead blasted zirc, rifled) installed, and went a little picture crazy.

In the second photo, that's the factory disk sitting on top of the PG disk. It makes the size difference really apparent!

The disk itself is nicely made: uniform finish, fits perfectly in the notch on the spine, and the rifling is well-executed and quite grippy. It came with a screw, but I just used my existing screw.

I installed it and then, after seeing just how close to the full width of the scales it actually is, took it back off. My Mini CQC-7 is already doing a number on the edges of my jeans pockets -- the texture on the G10 is more aggressive than on any other knife I've owned. With the disk so much wider, I figured the disk would also abrade my pockets, and since I don't have any issues opening the knife with the factory disk (muscle memory now nicely established after some regular carry), it didn't seem worth it.

But I decided to give it a shot for a couple days, at least, so I reinstalled it. It is easier to open with the larger disk, and I figure a few days of carry will tell me whether that matters, and whether the larger disk actually does wear my pockets out faster than the G10 alone.

That's . . . a lot of words about a ceramic widget smaller than my pinkie nail. :D Carry on as you were. ;)

Yeah, the G-10 IS pretty aggressive. I sent mine to a friend to change the scales on my Mini A-100, and I like it much better with smooth G-10. I may do the same with my OBS folder, when I can.

It's smoothing out, week by week. It's noticeably smoother than when I bought it.

Overall, this knife is breaking in beautifully. It really settles into a good groove over time.

Dadpool: That is great that the G-10 is smoothing out. It is a great knife!!

I'm going to have a few Pete Gray monster discs coming in the same material/finish thanks to this thread

Emerson's break in nicely and become butter smooth after a period of use. Enjoy it!
