My first exclusive/sprint run

Fyi, in my experience 20cv/m390/cts-204p has not chipped on me yet(although it can). I had s110v and s30v chip alot more on me then 20cv, which is strange because its in the middle of those 2 when it comes to hardness. But i also stopped stripping 12 gauge copper wire by the time i started using 20cv, so that could be why.
My new personal golden rule is to keep the blade off of other metals, and it seems to stays sharp for a really long time with no damage to the edge.

I see what you did there...

Hi Sgt,

Thanx for the input and I do understand. However, I am also a collector and I use all of my knifes for a while just to be able to appreciate them more fully. Just don't mess them up.

Understood but I think that you have far more resources available to do that than I do. ;)

Collecting/owning a knife is not the same as fully appreciating its design. I learned this recently with the Native 5 using it for actual work.

Again, understood, but I'm not going to use a $100-400 knife and diminish its value, when I can use a $50 knife to do the same job.

If one of my more expensive knives is the ONLY one than can do the job that I have in mind, then that would be another matter but I've never encountered a situation like that.

You can do whatever you like. They are made to be used. If you want to collect them so be it. He's not saying don't collect them. Ultimately they are users.

What's the point. If I don't use it, why get it. I mean that's just one perspective anyway. I've got $50- $500 knafs I use. Its mine. I'm going to keep them and not sell them. I'm going to use the heck out of them. Just tying money up in something to keep in a safe to maybe sell later... Hmmm. Not only that but these things can get a spa treatment if need be if value is a concern.

To each his own.

I have the $ to collect things that I value and appreciate for their design and appearance. I also have many things, including knives, that i use. For example, I do use all of guns, all of which are valued at far more than any knife that I own. I just CHOOSE not to use expensive knives to do things that less expensive knives can do just as well.

If you want to beat the hell out of your $425 Hinderer or any number of $100-400 Spydercos, Microtechs, Protechs or ZT's (all of which I have the privilege to own) be my guest but it's NOT anything that I would care to do myself.

I've got many other knives that will do the jobs that they can do just as well. They may not last as long w/o sharpening than the premium blades that I own but they are easily resharpened and can do whatever job I need them to do w/o worrying about wasting $100-400 in the process.

Different strokes for different folks.

BTW, as a retired LEO, trained in hand to hand combat and defensive tactics, my main use for knives and the main reason I carry one is strictly for self-defense (or offense, as the case may be). I have a variety knives (many of them Spydercos) designed specifically for this purpose but ANY knife can be used in this way.

However, I have NEVER used and hope to NEVER use a knife to maim or kill someone. So, in this sense, it is actually BEST that I NEVER USE any of my knifes. The same applies to all of the guns that I own and sometimes carry.

I can cut or kill you just as well w/the Cara Cara 2 that I'm carrying now, than I could w/the Amalgam that I just bought. But I will be much happier when the Cara Cara is seized for evidence, than if it was the Amalgam.

I hope you get my point but, if not, so be it.

Yes to each their own. My take away from Sal/Mo/the "use it!" camp is that only used knives can be fully appreciated, and I agree. Anyone is free to collect safe queens, but quite a bit of the effort spent on the design is lost on them because they don't experience it.

To each their own.

I use all of my knives. My GB2 looks like it was run over by a truck as does my ZT 620.

I take care of my stuff, it wouldn’t buy a knife to not use and store in a safe.

I don't see how you can truly appreciate a knife's qualities without using them? Edge holding in cutting abrasive materials, ergonomics when white knuckle cutting, etc. Unless you're in it for the looks or the collector's value later on down the road.

Leave a Spyderco unused too long and it will turn into a pumpkin.

But seriously, it's up to you OP. Congrats on getting a very nice Para2
My 2 groats? Use it.
I have 11 of them, 9 are sprints/DEs. All of them are users, or will be. Including this one.

You won't get wealthy from a handful of scarce releases...but you will get quite a bit of joy from putting them in your pocket and letting them work. (Including the satisfaction of maintaining and sharpening your treasures.)
This is right.
While I understand the inclination to collect scarce knives, reason tells me that they ll never be worth more than a few dollars more than what I paid for them. But using them will be worth a lot to me. I don t worry any more about the collecting aspect.

Thanks again for all of the input, guys. I really appreciate it. I get both sides of the argument of use/dont use. I think Sal tapped my mindset best, use it but dont abuse it. Since im just now getting into the exclusives/sprints, I think I will be taking it easy on them. They'll get used, no doubt, just probably not at work. Im pretty hard on knives there. Its not just the cutting aspect. They get dropped, sprayed with brake cleaner or electronics cleaner, cutting greasy/gritty stuff, hoses and wires, and (i know Ill get flamed for this one) prying o-rings out of o-ring seats at times. Because of that, I may carry it AT work, but more than likely alongside a knife I value less, like the production run S110V that I currently carry, which may even get swapped out to a run-of-the-mill S30V. Im tired of sharpening a sharp knife to get chips out of it, and I dont even abuse the S110V. Anyway, heres my first endeavor into the exclusives market. Looks the same as all the others, I know, but this one is mine!

Not related to the thread, but how do I insert pics directly in the post like Cursum did with his forum knife?

Click on the icon, (when typing your post), that looks like a postcard with a sun and mountain. Put the URL of the image in the box that shows up so that you can insert it directly into the post. (I went to your image, right clicked on it and copied the url before pasting it into the image box in the above post.)

Hi Nate,

I think that is a more realistic compromise. A knife is first and foremost a tool to use and we put the best materials into them so they can perform as a tool. We also use very close tolerances so they will last a long time performing as a tool. As you mentioned, a work knife is often abused and that's ok. Using knives that are more rare or special as a fine cutting tool is a good way to experience what we put into it without damaging the value.

Nate, it should look like this but with the lower case brackets [ ] substituted for the ones I use above, { }. (Otherwise the image will display again if I use the lower case brackets.)

Check to see if you're using exactly the same url that I used. (Which I took after going to the imgur, right clicking the image and then pasting it in the image box.)

I think I found the issue. When im in the imgur app and hit the "share" button then the "copy URL" button, I get the lower URL, which when pasting it, i would delete the "c81gptn2 s20v". But if I hard press the image in imgur and select copy from there, I get the top URL, which displays an image in the reply box like it should.
