Recently I made this pair that were designed by the customer. They are made from 3/16" thick BG-42. The blades are a spearpoint both are hollow ground.I was surprised at how easy it was to work. My main steel is D-2 and the BG-42 was a dream to work. Also it was the first time I have ever sent a blade out for heat treat. This was hard for me to do because I have always done my own on D-2, A-2, 154-CM and 1095. But I felt this steel required the talents of Paul Bos. I spoke to him on the phone before sending them out and he was a super cool guy who took the time to answer all my questions. Also we decided on 60 Rc. when I received the blades they were dead on 60, no warpage, no damage. Beautiful work. Both have nickel silver guards pinned, peened and soldered. One is red linen with black liners the other black canvas with red liners.By the way I got the steel from Tracy Mickley. I highly reccomend the services of both men mentioned in this thread.

Nice work. I love BG42. Both as a maker, and as a knife user. It takes and holds a wickedly sharp edge.

Can you give us the contact info on your heat treater Paul Bos? What is your recipe for heat treating 154cm.

This is the recipe I have used for 154-cm with no cryo.
I wrap the blade in foil (envelope) ramp oven to 1400 hold for 20 min. Ramp to 1900 hold for 30 min.The next step must be done quickly, Remove envelope hold over quench tank tip down. Snip the end off the envelope and let the blade fall tip down. Now the quench tank I use has a basket inside that holds the blade vertical and I can move it up and down. After cooling and cleaning I temper at 400 2x this usualy yields 58-60Rc. I have been told you can air quench 154-cm although I never tried. I do plan to send my next 154-cm blade to Mr. Bos because I was so pleased with his work. I think I will do all my D-2 , A-2 and 1095 at home and send out the stainless.

Thanks for the info. Do you have a ball park of what it cost to have a blade heat treated?

Those are both beauties! It's been around for a while, but BG-42 is still one of the best stainless around.

Trugrit still has some 1/8 x 1" BG42 in inventory - I picked some up today.

Not cheap though!
