My first experience with my new quenching oil...

I'm sure it also depends on the speed of the quenchant. I did a full quench yesterday in parks #50, and the whole thing got hard. I don't think motor oil would do that. :)
 
that is exactly it -- the difference in the speed of the spine and edge going over the nose will show you some great things about your heats and steels that you're using. As far as a difference in 1/4 vs 1/8th, I can only assume that there would be a difference, but I usually don't work with 1/8th-inch steel.
 
Ah great, good to confirm whats in your head. So basically we are looking at a huge trial and error system until we figure out the right temp to quench from with the right soak and right quenchant so that the spine cant quite make the nose while the edge will fully harden....easier said then done!

I have a whole bunch of that tested 1084 that after my may show I am going to start working on. I will be documenting all my soaks, temps, quench styles, clay thicknesses, etc. Maybe we can all do a brain dump of how we are doing things in one place.
