Being of practical mind, I've carried small LED lights for many years now. first was a Photon microlight 2, then a Dorcy single AAA pocket light. That gave way to a Gerber Sonic for a few years. Being a motorcycle camper as well as a backpacker, I always was fanatic about having the most miniature gear that was still capable of doing what it was designed to do. Monoculars instead of even mini binoculars, sak classic on keychain, stuff like that.

Well, after hearing so much about Fenix, I bought an EO1.

WOW!.

Not only a neat little light, but so impressive for such a little thing. I took it on the nights walk of the dog in the woods, and even though it's half the size of my Peak Solutions Keno Bay single AA light, it lights up the path in the woods just as well. It disappears in the pocket as well as my little Case Peanut, but when light is needed, this little thing comes through.:thumbup:

This is dangerous. I can see how flashlights can become addicting.

Carl.

Yes sir, dangerous indeed. If you're not careful, you will soon be talking about AA's vs CR123's the way you now talk about Stockmans vs Peanuts. Don't even mention the LED technology, which changes faster than computer technology. Good luck....

There are several reasonably priced AAA lights available that will make you say WOW. Fenix E05 and Maratac AAA or ITP are a few. Enjoy your new light.

Fenix E01.

I've been thinking about upgrading my Photon. How's the light output and burn time compare? Is the Fenix a lot bigger?

The E01 is regulated, meaning that it will keep the same output level for 8 or so hours (?) before starting to diminish. The Photon will start to diminish almost immediately, though you may not notice at first. Additionally, the E01's AAA battery is vastly more easy to buy at a Stop-n-Rob or steal from a household appliance in an emergency. The E01 is a little bigger than the Photon, but still de minimis on a keychain. Its not a high output light, but in real darkness it provides everything you need.

wow Powernoodle, that's an impressive list of torches you have there.......do you own all of them currently or is that just a list of all you have owned at some point?

only Fenix light i have is LD20 R4, which is the first light i bought after cruising around CPF.

to the OP, good buy, I may buy one for my wife's keyring.

It's hard to beat the E01 for $12.xx! Truth be told I think I use it as often as I use my knife ..... that is multiple times a day (or night for the E01). Since crossing the 60 y/o mark a couple years ago I'm not quite as sure footed at night as I used to be, going up/down stairs or walking outside. Plus there's many nooks & crannies around and behind stuff in the house (day or night) that need to be looked into to fix or adjust things and that little light has "saved the day" many times.

This little set-up rides LF along with the Peanut:

Well, it's a different class of light. It's bigger, and cylindrical in shape, so it takes up more room on the keyring. But... it gives a heck of a lot more light than the coin cell mini lights. Well worth the increase in size, and still able to go on a keyring, but I carry mine in a nylon and velcro belt pouch that was just big enough for a Victorinox tinker. The EO1 and a spare battery wrapped in glad wrap fits in side by side. My Princeton Tech Pulsar 2 is still on my keyring. I carry two small lights, one to back up the other.

In the woods at night, the EO1 lights up a good 25 to 30 yards of path. Much more than the coin cell keychain lights. Good throw, and longer run time at a high level of brightness. And I like the greater availability of AAA batteries. Twice I had trouble finding the 2016 cells for the Pulsar.

Carl.

Wait until you check out the L0D, same AAA battery, but what a light! I don't really care about the strobe, but 3 different levels comes in very handy. The brightest is really an amazing of light out of such a small package.

The Fenix E01 is a great small flashlight. I have the blue one on my keyring and an olive attached to my laptop bag.

I love the E01. I have one on my keyring, and so does my wife. Mine sits next to a Victorinox Manager on my keyring. My wife has a Vic Classic and Spyderco Jester/SE (both pink) on hers.

I just polished out the oxidation inside the reflector cone and noticed a brighter beam. I'll see how well it holds up after a few days in the pocket.

So these have a longer run time then the photon 2? I would upgrade for that reason alone but AAA's are a good reason too. Hmm...

Okay so the Fenix says it has a 21 hour burn time which is longer than the Photon 2. However it says it has 11 hour "sun time" and 10 hour "moon time." What is that? Is it full power for 11 hours then drops to a lower setting for 10 to regulate power or something?

I used Blue Coral Mag Wheel polish (Flitz). Put a dab on a Q-tip and swab till all the black is gone. Use the dry side to buff it out.

Could you use green compound from Bark River? Can't see why not just thought I'd ask.

Exactly. I guess so it doesn't leave you totally stranded without any light at all, but after dropping down to the lower setting I guarantee you'll be hunting down a new battery to get back to full power ASAP.
