My first Fiddleback knife - The Leuku

If I had it I would go for that green one going up this week too. Phew thats sweet. Make an awesome pair.

Dman, after checking your site it will be interesting to see how you capture your Fiddlebacks and present them to us.

Beautiful knife btw.

Until I get out in the woods here are some to get it started
These are in my Flickr account so to see a higher res just click the image, enjoy!

Is that background through the bulls-eye shot real or photoshop 'cause that's a great capture.

I like that one too. It just a closer shot of what you see In the second shot. It's a leather covered box I keep some of my art supplies in. The only thing done in Photoshop to these was sharpening, cropping, vignette and a little color correction. Otherwise they are as is from the camera. That particular one was shot with a 50mm prime 1.8 it has great depth of field, the camera data should still be intact on Flickr. Focusing with it is a pain. I can post the raw shot if you like. They are all shot with natural light which can be a pain since you have to wait for the right timeout hope you are in the right place at the right time of course. I took a ton of shots but those 4 were the only ones that looked decent.

Going to try to get out in the woods this weekend and get some more shots. Will use that 50mm for sure for some shots to get that DoF.

D,
Welcome to the addiction. Great knife. That Mango is something else. The knives are freaking awesome. There are a few other reasons I support Fiddleback Forge. Andy, Allen and all the rest of the Fiddleback Crew. Crazy talented craftsmen and women whose talent is matched only by who they are as people. And this motley bunch who are members of BF. This community is something special.

That's pretty great to hear. Everyone here tries their best to make each knife as perfect as possible.... Or it ends up in the trash can or as wall art

Here is the unedited vs edited of the bullseye shot for reference
I actually shot these and JPG and not RAW which would have included much more pixel data than the crushed JPG so some artifacting is more visible than I like.

Vance,

This brings up a few questions.

How many man hours would go into a Leuku, or on average any knife? I imagine something like the convex on the woodsman to be a super pain as Andy pointed out.

How many total years of experience went into it, for each person in the process touching/contributing to the knife (all in, design, cutting stock, handles, glue up shaping, blade shaping etc.) start to finish?

How many knives on average don't make the cut and end up stuck in the wall of shame (that corrugated metal wall we see in some shop pics with gashes and knife blanks stuck in it)?

Better coming later

Man, I'm loving those pics. If you're on instagram please post them there for me. I'm very glad you're pleased. I knew it wasn't going to be a problem though, that knife was one I wanted to keep!

Will do, but will re-shoot with a better camera, those are from my cell phone. If you want any of them I can direct email them to you or you can download them from Flickr. Just click on the image and it will take you there. You can choose to view higher res.

A friend at work has a Valkyrie and a Lonestar EDC, I will see if I can borrow them to shoot also.

@trestle,

Oh gotcha, yeah same thing there as the macro sample. I did add blur around the edges and erased some bits of crap that came out of that old skull onto the table. I had not looked at the bullseye until now, that was pure accident, coincidence or whatever you want to call it. I certainly did not plan or notice in lens.
The bony top of the nasal passage bit there is all broken and jut hanging on, looks like its the cracks right there at the bone suture where it meets the forehead.
Here is the original

Great thread, great pics and stunning knife! It was this thread that put me over the top to go after yesterday's green curly mango Leuku. I was, thankfully, lucky enough to snag it. I love the Recluse and I have wanted a larger handled knife. I think the Leuku was made for me. :D

Thanks and congrats, I love mine. That green will be amazing in the sun, I can see all manner of awesome pics come spring when all the new leaves are coming in.

Sorry for the confusion, I was referring to this image. But thanks for the info!

It looks like the background to me. The Bullseye is large enough that if it is close enough to a lighted object behind it, the detail will be picked up. Sometimes in shooting closeups of the bullseye I will focus through it in the process just playing around see what shows up in it. In these shots you can see how easy that would be. I have a few saved somewhere I played around with, I'll try to locate them.
