My First Fiddleback Scandi

Nathan, That is one good looking Arête! WOW! I'm gonna be on the lookout for a scandi Arête or KEBushie

-Will

Hasco - congrats on the Scandi arete. That's a great combo! The spalting on that Arete is amazing. Enjoy it!

Hey Will,

I have a Scandi HB and prefer my larger arete, kephart, or KEB for carving. The larger handle more than makes up for having to work with the longer blade. The arete and KEB are especially comfortable for my larger hands.

Sticking with the scandi Arete, here's a good carving pair.

You know you're just looking for another KEB. ;)

I like scandis in slim blades like the KE Bushie, Arete and maybe the Recluse (it also shows more of the beautiful spalting) IMHO it makes no sense with a scandi grind on the models with wider blades like the Bushfinger, Bushcrafter and Hunter. Can't see any advantages of a wider blade with a scandi and plenty of disadvantages.

When carving wood I prefer a scandi, for everything else I prefer a convex...

Thanks Thurin! You were definitely my biggest inspiration to go for a fiddleback scandi. I was hoping your green carver would come into this conversation. How is that thing? Have you gotten a lot of use out of it? That is an awesome pair of knives.

Cool hasco. I always hope I inspire people to try out stuff rather than drive them away. :)

I've played with the Carver a little bit. Picked up a couple of birch spoon blanks and started on one of them with the Carver. Working good so far. The concave blade takes a little getting used to. I really like the tip. I carved a wood spirit in my try stick with it, but it's not worthy of showing in public.

That makes a lot of sense to me!
