Hi all, here is my first finished knife. Note: I did not forge the blade, I bought it forged and heat treated (it will be some time before I have a setup to heat treat), however I had to remove all the scale, regrind the bevel and make the handle.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome, I got most of my info by searching this forum.

The handle is stag, brass spacer, cocobolo spacer, and brass guard which I made from stock (MUCH harder to do than I thought haha). The blade is a carbon steel searles bowie from crazy crow and it is much bigger than I thought when I ordered it. I do not have serious knife making tools yet, I did the grinding with my little 1x30 harbor freight belt sander (hence the grind marks on the blade). My goal was to have the stag shape "flow" towards the brass guard, it is very comfortable in the hands. Not perfect by any means, but overall I am very happy with how it turned out, and I had a blast doing it.

Let me know what you think!

great job on your first one. You went big huh? There is plenty of room for improvement but really a great effort on the one you made, its an addiction so be careful before you know it you'll be covered in dust and loving it.

Good job for your first. Man that's a lot of blade to tackle with a 1X30. I did 1 blade with a 1x30 then saw a 2x72 working in person and bought one. You don't have to have all the fancy tools to make great knives, but it does help. There are guys on here that make really nice stuff with files and sandpaper, it just takes longer. Yes, guards are difficult, I still struggle with them. I am no expert, a bit of a rookie myself.

Just a tip that has helped me. Get a book, blade mag, or look here on the forum for knives you like and try to make one like that. Now as they say "Go make another one." Good job, keep at it.
