Went for a little hike today. It was about 30F clear. I went down to an old loggers clearing from about 1 mile from my home. I havent been in the woods for many years so this was fun.
I found an old tractor seat with a 1/4" thick base on it and inverted it for my fire as the ground and rocks are well snow and ice covered. There was plenty of dried weeds and tiny pine cones (i guess theyre pine). I made a nice bundle about palm sized and got out my fire kit. It consists of a pill bottle filled with some dryer lint (great fire starter IMHO) some Twine, a fire steel and a razor blade (striker).
I used my old $2 hammer made knife for a striker and voila. The dryer lint burns nice and holds a flame well. I flubbed with the fire steel and knocked the bundle all to hell but the lint held a flame till I reconstituted the pile. There was enough dry brush and fallen wood to make a real fire but I just wanted to practice. This was the first fire I made without matches or a lighter so I was pretty happy. Next time out Ill try a bow&drill and maybe work on some shelter skills.
