Well, I am a pocket knife guy, but wanted to get a nice fixed blade. Got a good deal on this Case.

I have always like the look of the stacked leather handle ever since my sister had one when I was a kid. I use to take it out in the woods and play cowboys and indians with it. SHH. Don't tell her.

I think my next one will be a Buck I was eyeing up the other day.

Case always makes a good knife. However, if you're really looking for that Buck, can't really go wrong with the 119. Time-tested model that's still in production today. I'm not sure if they're doing the stacked leather these days, or ever (am I thinking of the right knife?), but it's definitely a solid knife for the money.

I've also heard wonderful things about Bark River knives. Haven't had a chance to try one of those out, as they're a little too rich for my blood, but for the money, they're supposed to be darn well made. Don't know much about taking care of convex edges though.

I heartily recommend looking at Bark River. There is a huge variety of sizes, styles, and handles, many of which are based on traditional patterns. Most are carbon steel (A-2) and they are made to work. I have a curly maple Northstar and a green canvas micarta Mini Canadian.

Convex edges are mostly idiot-proof. To sharpen, use some 1000 to 2000 grit sandpaper backed by something yielding, like a mouse pad or thick leather. Sharpen with a stropping motion rather than a slicing motion.

DLT Trading and Knivesshipfree have good selections to browse.

The Buck 119 is the one I was looking at. I will look into Bark River.

Thanks,

BTW I also own and use a Buck 119 in 420HC.

Gorgeous find...love that stacked leather handle.

I'm also thinking about a Buck 119 (which will be my first fixed blade), but I'm torn between that and a KA-BAR 1218.

Yeaqh the stacked leather handle is what got my to bid on it. It was not that great looking when I got it. But I put some Ren wax on her, and she looks a lot better now. I won a Queen fixed blade I can go pick up tomorrow. Should be interesting. I have never seen a Queen fixed blade.
