This is my very first folder design.
Go ahead...tear me a new one...

Took me about oh...2-3 hours...
Started from a freehand pencil sketch with no references - only mental. Scanned in and redrawn using Freehand (macromedia) and rasterized for web viewing on Photoshop.

I like it and I would like to see how it felt in my hand. If it was on a table I would have to ask if I could pick it up and check it out.

To take it to the next level of design.
What type of steel and handle material are you thinking about?

Awesome! Is the lock mechanism like the axis lock?

I was thinking of CPM440V for the blade.
The handle maybe aluminum 600 series or maybe G10...the usual stuff...

The handle will have some gripping grooves that will echo the ventilated spine of the blade...it probably won't be green either...

Of course, it is going to be a while before I have the skill and equipment to execute this design...

Once I get good enough, I intend to make this and auto axis lock...

The axis lock will have a tritium inlay...red...

I like the look of that handle, and the thumb ramp is nice. Personally, I don't like recurves (hard to sharpen) or swept points (just don't like 'em), but that my personally preference, since plenty of people really do like 'em. One thing to note is that the axis lock (as far as I can tell, that is what you are using there) is patented, so you would have to get permission from McHenry&Williams. See the post in the 'custom knife forum' for a link to the patent. If you can get permission, and do a drop point or spear point, without the recurve, I would definitely consider it.

Do I have to get permission if I only intend to make it for myself? I don't think I will have the skills or equipment to do this for several years...

Anyway, this is all just a pipedream at the moment...

I like recurves - I feel that they offer more power in cutting.

Yup. Check out that thread over in 'custom.' I don't know either of them, but I think most knifemakers would probably grant permission if you didn't plan on selling them. As I said, I only don't like recurves for sharpening reasons, and I hike a lot, so I like to keep profiles which are simple to sharpen. That drawing definitely looks a lot better than my usual knife sketch.

Joe, why do you think people here are out to rip you up? I think this is the second time you've mentioned it.

It's not my style of knife, but it looks very professional. The only thing I see is, that it doesn't seem to have much of a thumb purchase for opening. Other than that I think it's great. Good luck whatever you decide to do with it.

What was that, PhiL? I don't see anything like that in any of his posts in this thread.

On another note, I didn't notice the lack of a thumbstud. That would be a definite recommendation from me (that way you can offer a non-auto version for those of us who are not allowed to carry autos, due to geography).

How about these?
No recurve, no swept point.

I don't especially like thumb studs.
I like how the 3rd one is similar to the Pacific Coast Indian Raven Carving.

The second one is nice. I should have said 'one hand opening,' not thumbstuds specifically. How does the blade grind change at each of those lines across it?

DAMN fine stuff here.

No joke. Good design, better than most production pieces, EXCELLENT drawing.

One interesting thing though: the lock, to me, looks a lot like the old Blackie Collins "Bolt Action" as used on the Gerber Parabellum, in my opinion the "first megafolder". The only significant difference between the Bolt Action and the Axis is that the Axis is ambi, with the thumb-slide "drawbar" available on both sides.

(Scratches head)

Does anyone know if the Axis is actually a tighter lock than the old Bolt? The Bolt-action is in the public domain by now. REKAT uses a single-side lock release slide that's not mechanically anything like the Bolt or Axis, except perhaps at first glance and the release stroke and placement is near-identical between Bolt and Rolling Lock.

If one wanted a no-royalty lock, the Bolt may be worth reviving?

I think these will be my last two....
Is what I am doing annoying? I don't want to wind up like G.....R

Hey Jim,
Thanks for the compliments...
I was working on those last two as you were writing that post.

I am not begging for any free knives but I am looking for a better job...(hint to any mfgs' out there) (email from a company website will get my resume...)

Not going to turn down offers though

Aah, prolly ain't THAT good...
Thanks for any feedback though.

Well, I seem to be one of very few online at the moment (ahh, college...), so I will post again, I guess. Let's see, I kinda liked the green, but you could offer various colors if it is a custom knife, so that doesn't matter. The curve on the clip might get hung up on the seam at the edge of the pocket (I'm not certain, though; does anyone have experience with clips like that?).

Have you done any fixed blade designs? They are much easier to make as a beginner, so concentrating on those would allow you to actually start making knives and developing real-world skill (trust an engineer, theory and practice are separate things).

I don't find this annoying, and I plan on making up some computer-friendly drawings of my designs once I can get some free time. If this isn't what Bladeforums is here for, I don't know what is.

very nice....the only negative comment i would have is that it will take you a LOT longer than a few years to have the skill to make such a knife, unless you start doing it really a lot....good luck...

i really like the first one, has a very agressive look to me and i like recurves and tantos too. but what i would change is the lock, i prefer frame lock, but thats only me... joe can i have one made by tom? tom would you make me one?

Cool design, Joe. I like the first one, though the blade looks like a Lum Tanto, hehe..

What software did you use to draw this anyway? Nice drawings!

Oh yeah, sent you mail re: fedex package.
