Hello to everyone,

This morning my mom brought home from the local post office THE package, which contained my first folder.... what follows are a few photos of the goodies;) and a request for some help...

I was now wondering, since this is my first folder, if you could spare a few words of advice as to caring for this knife. What are some of the do's and don'ts of this kind of knife, that sports a SV30 blade? For your information, here are the knife's specifications:

Maker: Benchmade
Model: Osborne Black (943 MCP)

Blade length: 3.50 in.
Total length: 7.87 in.
Blade width: 0.84 in.
Blade thickness: 0.11 in.
Item weight: 2.62 oz.
Blade: Satin finished S30V premium stainless steel (58-60HRC)
Handle: Machined aircraft grade aluminum with a hard coat anodized finish
Style: Folding Axis lock

Thanks in advance,

Edalb

Get yourself a TUF-CLOTH or something similar to maintain it. As for sharpening you can read a lot about that on this forum.

All types of steel require one condition : keep them dry after use.

First folder, and you already got a BM943, nice one ! Excellent choice !

nice -enjoy

hope the disease doesnt take hold to hard-once you buy one folder you just cant stop-lol

Don't send it to the first poster to say, "It's junk, send it to me, I'll dispose of it for you."

Hold out for a trade for a William Henry, Sebenza, SnG, or something that will do as well. :D

Great first knife.

My Osborne is a 154CM blade, but I have other blades in S30V from Benchmade. All mine have needed is a periodic wipe down with a Tuff Cloth and touching up the edge with a Sharpmaker at 30 degrees after they're used some.

Congratulations! It is a very nice folder. Nice size and style.

Dittos on what barecut said.

Read about sharpening and practice on another knife. Maybe some
cheap kitchen knife sold in a grocery store. Be careful not to round
over that nice point. Or, send it back to BM for sharpening.

Get the little Benchmade BlueBox that has a sets of Torx heads. Then you
can easily adjust the pivot pin screw if it gets a little loose over time.

A tiny bit of lube now and then where the blade povots would be good.

I wouldn't snap the blade open too frequently. It's fun, but no need to put extra stress on the knife and I would be careful about who is around when you do it.

A very good start, I wish that had been my first knife.

Now make sure you have the equipment to keep it sharp.
The Spyderco Sharpmaker is generally the easiest way to do a good job, though I prefer the freedom of (no pun intended) freehand sharpening. Set your bevels and micro-bevels at whatever angle you want, the downside is excessive amounts of time getting technique right and lots more equipment involved.

Like everyone else has said get a sharpmaker and some militec. I remember my first folder congratulations I can guarantee you will buy more in the near future.

First of all congrats on the new knife. I love benchmades.. in particular their axis models. And you got yourself a good one. So here is my advice... dont misplace it or you will be buying another. and since you got such a good knife you probably wont need anymore so if you dont want to keep buying knives id close your bladeforums account and never come back. I tell you this place is more addictive then crack.

Nice purchase, Edalb.

Simply, keep it clean and it will last you a good long time.

Keep it sharp, and it will be much easier to maintain it's sharpness than if you let it get all dull, dinged, and chipped before resharpening. Get a good sharpening steel and a medium and fine stone. There's plenty of good reading online about how to sharpen knives if you don't already know. Enjoy, and keep the band-aids close by for the first week while you play with it.

That's one wicked first folder, mate. Excellent choice.

Just keep it clean and dry, don't let it get too dull and touching up the edge should be easy.

Excellent knife!

I have been carrying a 154CM 943 for about 3 years as a work knife and it has been excellent!

Don't worry about babying it, use it hard-it wont let you down!

Learn how to sharpen it freehand and get a DMT duofold diamond sharpener with the red fine on one side and green extra fine on other side.

nice starting knife. I really love benchmades. Just keep your knife clean and lubricated and it will last you years. Learning how to sharpen it would also be useful (ID SUGGEST LEARNING ON A CRAPPY KNIFE THOUGH=))

What a way to start your collection

Benchmade, S30V, and the Axis lock - you definitely did your research before picking this up. Congrats on a very nice knife which I have also been considering :D

Must agree with everyone here that you made a wonderful choice for your first folder. In fact, my very first folder was also a BM 943 (SBK though...) and it's in my pocket right now! It is a wonderful and sturdy knife; you won't be disappointed :)

Nice choice, for your First Folder.

With this kind of pick for your first, I can see many years of Collecting.

Congratulations, Enjoy.
