My first folding knife.

Einherjar, another way of going about this. Save up and buy the small CRK Sebie (Buy good, buy once type of philosophy). Then if for some reason you don't like it, you can sell it and buy a couple other knives and still have some cash left over.

Is the Sebenza THAT good? I mean, is it worth the extra money? What makes it better than a Delica or a Griptilian?

I'm kinda confused, I guess I need some time to absorb all the information you guys have kindly given me.

I like the BM 556 & 705 a lot. I also like the Delica. This is gonna be a difficult choice. Perhaps I should buy both the Spydie and the BM. :D

Anyway, thank you guys. Your sage advice is being processed right now. Hope one day I'll be able to return the favor.

The Sebie, as far as quality is concerned is that good :D . There are many who have purchased other folders, only to end up getting a Sebenza and wishing they had done that first.

1SKS does pricematching. Their listed prices are high because Benchmade sets a minimum-allowed advertising price for official dealers.

Einherjar: You asked if the Sebenzas were worth additional money. If you were only going to buy one small knife for the rest of your life I would say look around on ebay for a new one at a great price. Then I would buy it. At the full suggested retails, I would say it is not worth the money. I do not want to start a long tedious Sebenza thread. I like Sebenzas. I own a large classic with leather inserts. However, I am trying to view this through your orginal set of restrictions (budget etc).

Buy a Benchmade and you will be happy, and within your budget. Then the next step is to go nuts and buy more knives. Sooner or later you will own a Sebenza. But my one Sebenza can never take the place of all the other folders I have collected. The Sebenza is part of my "collection". It is not the "collection" itself.

Welcome to the Bladeforums. My second home!:D
I would offer one suggestion. With the purchase of your first folder, get a Spyderco 204 Sharpener to go with it. Then if you buy a knife that is partially serrated, you will have the means to sharpen it. A 204 is one of the best 40.00-50.00 investments a knife owner can make. That would leave you a 100.00 towards that folder you want. I think that the FRN Native by Spyderco and a Benchmade Griptilian would make a great pair for you to start with. Happy hunting. There is a world of sweet steel to choose from! ;)

Save your money and buy a small Sebenza. Then send it off to Tom Mayo in Hawaii to have him customize it for you. You will then have the holy grail of folding knives. This will save you money and a lot of aggravation.   ;) :p

Man... this is going to be difficult. So many knives to choose, so many brands, so many... I want'em all!

Hehehehe... I'm becoming a knife-addict. :D

I dont know if its been posted ! I just woke up .Anyways this forum has some very nice knife passarounds with a chance to own them sometimes . If you not in a hurry, sign up for a few . Please dont go out and buy a cheap knife . But I guess I will sugest a few . Kershaw makes some nice knives and they are cheap in price . I my self went out and bought some magazines . several in fact , seen what I liked then ordered them off the web . Web prices are alot better then store or magazine prices! Kershaw and crkt have some great knives that wont take you broke.I just bought a spyderco delica yesterday . I try and get a new knife once a week . I paid 25 bucks at a pawn shop . It was a older model but in mint shape with the plastic clip. Or just type in a serch for production knives or knives in a serch engine and check out some web pages ! I think whatever you decide you will soon want something better :) I wanna get a benchmade for my next knife , I have the griptilion which is very nice , but i want the 94 models . anyone have a nice one for sell email me !

My advice for what it's worth is a Spyderco Delica.

It was my first knife and is still my favorite. It's the most usefull knife I have.

Saludos desde Mexico ...

Being in Spain I suppose you can get some nice local knives at good prices, Muela, Aitor, Andujar, Nieto, and probably others that I haven´t heard about.

I´m a traditionalist so I would go for a good old navaja or some old style lockback, but they make some nice tacticals too.

i would go with the "save up to buy a good knife" tack
i got my first knife, an MoD Trident about 8 months ago
it's still my edc even after getting 4 more
*sniff*
you always remember your first time

There are some good knives around here, but I want a tactical folder, I don't really like 'the navaja' style. Tacticals are an american invention and they know how to make damn good knives (not that spanish knife-makers aren't good enough, but it's not my kinda blade, y'know).

I like the Mini Sebbie a lot, but I'm afraid my wife ain't gonna be happy with it. I better choose a cheaper folder to start with.

I for one totally understand, my Wife thinks I'm crazy. I suggest that you go with a Spyderco or Benchmade. They are excellent knives that can be had for modest amounts. Good luck.

Welcome Einherjar!

Since you stated that you liked the small sebenza and you want a tactical folder I thought I would mention my EDC - a N.I.C.A Small Tanto Sebenza. There are still a few available if you look hard enough.
Look here for a picture.

Good luck with your decision!!:)

I know the feeling...

I have learned to spot the danger when she gives me that weird, amazed look. Then I know something nasty is coming this way so I better be careful. :D

Nobody's mentioned the Al Mar Ultralights yet, but they're supposed to be a nice EDC. Steel is AUS-8 (not as fancy as VG-10 or ATS-34, but very decent).
What interests me is the blade thickness -- 1/16 inch with a flat grind, so they should cut very easily.

Two excellent edc knives are the Kershaw 1415 Starkey ridge, and the Spyderco Calypso Jr. LWT. They are a little hard to find, but they are worth the looking.
