Awhile back I purchased a ZDP-189 Dragonfly 2 and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. It's light weight and thin, full-flat ground blade make it a dream to carry and use. ZDP-189 is good stuff . I'm not a big fan of FRN, especially in comparison to G10, so I thought, heck, why not swap handles with the G10 version? Warranty? We don't need no stinkin' warranty! :D

Taking the blade out was no problem, but reassembling the G10 variant is far more difficult than the FRN version. The G10 Dragonfly has separate liners, handle scales, and backspacer as opposed to the solid one piece construction of the FRN version. But it all came together in the end. The look and feel, IMO, is fantastic.

Very nice. I put one of these together too. The thickness of the G10 makes the knife much easier to open and close with one hand.

I've been wanting to do a blade swap with my zdp and g10 'fly but I can't remove the pivot pin on the FRN ZDP 'fly, the pin keeps spinning and i can't loosen or tighten it. Is the pivot pin fully round or is there a flat side that mates up with a flat side in the FRN pivot hole? If so that's probably been stripped on mine.

I did manage to swap my g10 jester sprint handles with my zdp 'bug though... that has very thin bronze washers which make it quite fiddley.

Very nice. I swapped the blade and lock from a Delica ZDP to a Delica trainer and have been pleased with the results. It is fun to have one of the few red handled, live blade (ZDP to boot) knives around. Plus, the red is a nice color according to my wife.

The pivot pin is fully round, IIRC. I was able to stop it spinning with just finger pressure. The tightness of the pin in the handle is probably one of those things that varies slightly from knife to knife.

Thanks for the info :)

It's nice to know nothing is damaged.

Now I just need to figure out some way of securing it sufficiently to remove and subsequently replace the pin after a blade swap.

I am an avid dragonfly enthusiast. Ive used a ss dragonfly for at least 10 years now. I think its time to upgrade. So I bought a used g10fly and I just ordered a zdpfly So I could try a blade swap. I am happy to find this thread and know that it works. Has anyone ever taken apart a ss handle dragonfly?

Good luck, I had the same problem with mine, I tried as hard as I could and couldnt loosen or tighten the pivot, there is no way to hold the opposite side from spinning. Very annoying.

There is a way, slot it with a cut off wheel so you can hold it with a flathead screwdriver.

That's a killer combo. As much as I like FRN G-10 can't be beat for traction. Also as of lately ZDP-189 has grown on me a great deal and is slowly becoming my favorite spydie steel. All in all Spyderco needs to take note of this configuration IMO.

For courage in the face of adversity, and an unbounded will to push back the boundaries of knife design, I bestow upon thee the Order of the Golden Noodle. Well done.
