I am searching for a good all around outdoor fixed blade knife and am open to any suggestions you all may have. I camp and hike and want a good strong blade for general cutting, like rope and things. I have looked at the Cold Steel Master Hunter and the Benchmade Griptillan as choices so far. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you may have. JohnB

Well CS is a company you could go with I think Bark River knives are a very good choice for a good outdoor knife and feel warmer too than CS stuff does. What is your price range? What size blade are you looking for? Sounds like you want a 4-6 inch knife. Do you like antler and horn or do you want micarta and other synthetics? You could go with a Buck 119 or a Rat5. You could look at a bk6, or a RD6. There are alot of choices out there, the CS is an ok blade in my book but
there are alot of other choices out there that i like better.

Thanks for your quick reply barrabas74, I guess I should have given a bit more info. Yes, a 4 to 5 inch blade is good with a wood or stacked leather handle as preference but the hard rubber ones I've been seeing are alright. Price range is about $60-$80. Thanks again.

Another vote for Bark River. SUPERB knives at a very reasonable price. Take a hard look at their Northstar! A-2 tool steel, and convex ground. About as close to perfect as you can get, IMNSHO!:p

Well I gotta go with the Northstar for Looks and For feel I agree with Ben Dover. I own one and I LOVE IT, its not my primary knife but when it was it was good. The BK7 is a nice knife also but it might be a bit big for what you want, however it does have a nifty lil pouch and you can make that a survival knife and hook all sorts of stuff too it. By the way Ben Dover.....is your name supposed to be a pun (bendover)? If not no affence intended I just thought it was a good name.

I have the Master hunter I think it a great field knife & it's a 2nd. Just got the fixed griptillan so I can't say much about it but first impressions are good. Now I want a Bark river.

Check out the BK&T Campion(sp?). I carried that knife for two long years which included deployments, camping, vehicle extraction drills, and flat out destructive abuse. And that knife took it all. I bought two of them cause I thought I would surely break one during my deployment. But I never did! The knife blade is 5" long, .25" thick and comes with a kydex sheath. You can find it for just under $60.00 US and it'll cost a few bucks more for shipping, but is one helluv a knife. Check it out! :)

The Bk7 is really tough, but I hate the handle. It felt akward for me doing even the simplest stuff with it. I didn't bother replacing the handle, but that would have helped a great deal. I personally like my Ka-bar. They sell shorter models which fit your specs, and would probably serve you well.

Both the Cold Steel Master Hunter and Pendelton Hunter are great users. The Pendelton IMHO is a bit more rugged and durable than the Master Hunter, which is a better slicer and a little longer in length. Both are satin in finish which is a plus for me as they are more appeasing to the eye when cooking and cleaning fish and game. The black epoxy finish just doesn't look right to me when you are cutting into a steak and the like.

Bark River
Ontario...RAT series
Ka-Bar short heavy bowie

Got a few of all of them...like them all so much its hard to choose which one to use...but its usually a Bark River Gameskeeper or RAT-7 in 1095 or a TAK-1 in d2.
