well i have been saying for a wile now that i need a set of tongs to hold my 1" L6 round stock. so tonight i broke down and made a pair. man its not as hard as i thought it would be. they are big tongs and man are they burly and tough. here are some pictures for you to enjoy. they might be a little to chunky but i am really going to bee wailing on that 1" round so i don't want any slippage. the jaws are fit perfect to the 1" round and don't allow any movement. enough chit chat here you go.

JT,

You did a great job on those tongs, they look like they'll do just what you made them for.

in my neverending search for old knives/tools i come across old blacksmith type tongs. could these be adapted for knife working? i see lots of em for $5-10. just curious. paul

Yes Paul they can be.

JT, great work! Never anything wrong with making tools beefy, those look strong enough even for powerhammer work.

What is the material of that tong, did you HT and temper? Great work BTW...

I would think that they would be made from low or medium carbon steel. As the tongs get very hot you will cool them in your slack bucket often, high carbon would have a tendency to crack when doing that  (my 2 cents)

thanks everyone. the rains are 4140 (will have to check) and the jaws are 1018 i think. i will double check the material for you

Great job JT, I am beginnig to wonder if there is anything that you cannot build? You did good on these!

Those look great! How did you put the hole in for the pin? That allows movement of the tongs?

Thanks, kiddsgames
