Had a few hours today to kill so I took a little ball peen hammer and turned it into this! I'm happy with it except on the final quench, apparently I had let my water cool too much and picked up some cracks (pretty bad ones). But hey, just a play piece and was curious how easy it was too re-work a ball peen. Let me know what you think!!!!

very cool! im going to have to try that. i really like the tiny hawk look, handy pocket size. other than harbor freight, any hammer brands to avoid?

Thanks! I don't know about specific hammers, this was just one of those tiny ball peens like for tacks and such. I got a first good quench with no cracks but noticed that I had a slight twist in the blade, so I heated it back up, straightened it up and then let it normalize. Unfortunately in the process forgot to reheat my brine and felt that nasty vibration when it hit the quench. The good thing is that it's hardened really well. I tried to stamp it and it wouldn't even leave a mark. Not gonna bother with temper on this one :) Have to go out and see if Ace has any of the little hammers so I can try this again. Have a Happy Holiday season!

I used a 16oz ball peen from harbor frieght, and didnt have any problems with it, just gotta avoid over heating it. That tiny tapper turned tiny slicer looks awesome!

Well I know the cracks are not good, but I still like it. Good job on all the other. It likes cool to me. Hell, I love it the more I check it out.

Appreciate it! If only I had heated the water again...dang wintertime. I'm gonna go ahead and through a handle on it and make it a desk maiden. :D

Looks good from here Eric! Maybe try an oil quench next time and see if it gets hard enough with that. Brine can be a challenge no matter what you do.

Yea, brine sucks, just haven't ordered any Parks. The next one will be much better :D

Just grind it into a mini- bearded axe and bypass the crack!! I had no idea it was that small until the hand pic- I want one!!

If you can't get Parks, I have had good luck with Olive Oil heated to 130-140 f

I will be buying some Parks when the winter heating season is over, but a 1 gal can of olive oil from a restaurant supply store will last me 5 years.

BTW nice little hawk, temper it, drill a little hole at the end of the crack to keep it from propagating, just heat it real gentle for the temper (or get a diamond dremel bit and drill your relief hole that way)
My favorite carry knife is the first blade I ever hammered out, it cracked in the heat treatfor almost 3/8 inch I got annopyed and tossed it aside (found out later I had tried oil hardening an air hardening steel according to the guy who had given me the bar, explains why it didn't move all that easy no more mystery metal!) after a good many years I sick of looking at the unfinished blade, stuck it in an antler and have worn it since 1998 I think, it hasn't broken yet. If it breaks you've lost nothing, if the hole stops the crack propagation you can open it up into a bottle opener or something :D

Had me fooled! I thought she was a full sized hawk.....

Nice stuff, I have some old hammers and peens I coould do that too...

LOL! Yea, I like putting the scale pic last. I've been meaning to get back out and hammer out a few more for novelty sales, just haven't had a chance. Been too busy with the stock removal. Thanks for the comments guys and Paige, thanks for the tips, I'll definitely see if I can modify it enough to make it useful! :D

Definitely want to see it when it's done, bet it looks better than the 1095 axe head I just forged out when they're both finished

:D

You're on, Paige. Make sure and bring it to Ashokan if you go this year!
