My first heat treat 1095

Hi friends,

Sometimes I just need to write, it almost doesn't matter what about. I think I often get carried away in my efforts at creative expression.

Kevin, I truly appreciate your expertise and willingness to share. I have been garnishing a good deal of information about metallurgy and heat treating from reading various postings of yours. I'm just starting to read through your website offerings. THANKS SO MUCH! Someday maybe I'll be able to afford the Heat Treat book. Until then, you guys are about all I've got.

Stacy, thanks for the reconfirmation on focusing on the proper methods as the most preemptive way to assure you get what you want. After all, no matter what testing methods you use, if you don't know what you're doing, how to do it, and actually do do it, then the best tests in the world are only going to reveal poor results.

Koyote, thanks. I'm so pleased to meet someone who has made so much progress on the path. Do you have a website or some way we can see your work?

David, I look forward to our meeting. I'll get in touch on my return to Hawai'i Ne.

Aloha all, Phil

Kevin: You have a very good point about the edge testing using the brass rod, but- while I haven't built up a good data set- it *seems* to correlate reasonably well. At least, I don't have massive failures of the edge on the rest of my testing if I pass the rod test. Be interesting to firgure out a way to correlate.

Phyl: www.koyotemakesstuff.com - I've got some 1084 and 5160 projects in the works but am mostly putting out 15n20 and L6 right now. Not sure why, just a phase. Enough of that is stock removal that I'm getting a really good feel for the Coote, 8 inch grinder, and handle shaping.
