Greetings everyone,

First I suppose I should introduce myself. I'm an engineering student (computer engineering) as anyone can tell by the permanent black rings under my eyes. I've been playing pentjak silat for a couple of years now (since I dont live in the woods I need some kind of excuse for my interest in knives

) Anyways I've been lurking on this forum for almost a year now, started prior to my first order which of course determined my choice of khukuris (had been thinking of getting the cold steel one but after handling one at a knife show and all the positive comments and feedback from this forum, not to mention the "star wars cantina" atmosphere as someone said, well it just had to happen.
so on to the good stuff, after careful deliberation for sometime I put an order in with uncle bill for a 20" ang khola unfortunatly he was out of stock at the time and a couple of months passed I got a message on my machine that one had come in in a shipment did I still want it? Hell yes and wow not three days later I was down at the post office to pick the package up...now I knew beforehand it was going to be a pretty big knife, but I wasnt prepared for the size box they handed over to me...my awe was just beginning as the moment I got it home and ripped the box to shreds and unwrapped the well I was at a lost for words this thing was huge all I could think was wow I ordered a sword, I comparing this to my other knives is a bit like comparing a hacksaw to a chainsaw...and size aside this knife if we must call it that was absolutely beautiful in both a functional sense and an aesthetic sense, so after swinging it around endlessly (and thus developing the necessaring forearm strength, another secret benefit to the 20" AK) and dropping it once in a rather ill advised move thus nearly creating a new section to my sectional couch, I unknowing had caught khukuri fever and promptly emailed off an order for one of the first or second batches of villagers, I mean you need something to keep in the car) so now armed with a monster and a burning desire to cut things (preferably things other than my furniture or feet) I headed up to my parents place to hack apart some dead oaks and cherry trees ( I own a condo unit and the homeowner agreement has rules against removing trees and running bordellos or churches which kind of puts a kink in my plan to start up a khukuri sex cult but thats life), it performed as expected which is perfectly taking most of the smaller limbs off in a single whack once I got the hang of the blade shape and most of the medium branches took only a few hits.
So anyways the other day the fever hit again and soon will have that wwII with the chiruwa handle uncle bill put up the other day, will let you know how it goes, it may be awhile though since finals are next week and I still have a group project which in regards to uncles quote "there is now project that can not be done without too much help" I definatly have too much help, and though I personally think the AK would be a good management tool the administration tends to frown on these things

Wow! Pentjak silat! I saw a demo a couple years ago... cool art, very cool.

Glad you are enjoying your khukuri, and welcome.

"Oh, a magic khukuri. Why didn't you say so?"

Now what you need is something long and skinny and light. A Chaimpuri, or one of Kumar's little nasties. The AK is cool and a lot of knife, but I've got a 21" "Chaimpuri-oid" type less than half it's weight and YE GODS that sucker can move.

Take one to the Dojo, let your teacher play with it a bit. Khukuris seem to fit well with the FMAs, at least per what I've heard.

Jim

Jim,
Wouldn't you know, I'm considering my fourth binge to be one of kumars, deciding between ordering one of the cobras or waiting to see how those king cobras turn out, I tell you next the AK the balinese goloks I have look kind of dainty however they do fit between the mattress and box springs quite and release from the scabbard very easily allowing someone to roll out of bed and armed nice and quickly. As for taking the khukuri to the dojo or kendang, wish I could been teacherless since I moved out of florida, these small indiana towns dont offer much in the filipino or indonesian flavors, pity.

Jeff, thanks for the welcome, its a great place here, curry, cherokees, monkey collecting coconuts, yankee civil war soldiers armed with khukuris, never a dull place.

Crow, many thanks for the feedback from the field. Valuable information.

And, I love your sense of humor. Now you know why I would not live in a condo! Crow said it better than anybody I've heard yet.

Welcome to the forum, crow!

I have a friend here in Portland who studies Silat when he is home in California.

He was raised Jewish but now he has become a Sufi.

I agree about the Star Wars Cantina atmosphere here. Actually, one of the few things in my life that I can brag about is that I have _actually been_ to the real life star wars bar as featured in the movie. It is now used as a hotel, but it was originally just one of many homes carved out of caves in Matmata, Tunisia.

Sadly, I only had one night to spend there and so I didn't get a chance to visit the nearby town of Tatouine.

What with the surly Tunisian staff, French and Japanese tourists who didn't seem to like each other very much, and a 4WD expedition run by a bunch of sunburned and crazed Germans, the Mos Eisley Cantina was perhaps weirder in real life than it was in the movie, but not nearly as bizarre as the people on this forum.

Again, welcome!

Crow.
  • Pencak Silat!
  • Salam Hormat
Wowwww! ...
Am I dreaming!
  • Who are you Crow?
  • Where did you learn Pencak Silat (Malay MA)?
  • What style of Pencak Silat are you practicing?
  • Where did you learn Malay Langguage?
So many Q! Your story reminded me of my past as a temporary teacher at my hometown village ... the sound of Pencak Silat Gendang (Drum) during the night! The gracious shadow dance of Pencak Silat by young Pendikar (Silat Fighters) in the Gelanggang (Open Dojo)! Nostalgic ...

Pakcik Bill.
It surprise me that there is a Pencak Silat Pendikar in US! It seems this HI forums has successfully unfold so many untold stories - it's just fantastic!

You'd definatly be surprised silat is becoming quite a popular (relative to its former obscurity) style in this country, as for teachers well to make a broad generalization the silat exodus came mainly from the dutch indonesians after ww2, the dutch didnt particularly want them and the indonesians really didnt want them so they came here bringing their arts with them, here I am speaking primarily of the deThouars brothers, jim ingram, Willem Reeders, in this we also have a fair representation of kuntao and mixtures etc... then you have Herman Suwanda and his mande muda which has made quite an impact here. As for my knowledge of malay, well I have picked up a few words here and their but not enough to start a conversation with someone, well could perhaps do alot of miming and silat terminology. Do hope to learn more malay though. Speaking of which a there is a really great mailing list and website operated by a gentleman out of kuala lumpur, www.pendekar.com I think. I saw your description in another post of silat as being a shy martial art, had to think about it a bit, shy and broken necks and a fondness for knives seems odd, however it's an excellent description the more I think about it, since silat tends to be rather indirect in its approach and its use of deception.

Hey crow, welcome to the forum. The cantina has an open door to all. It is good to hear from others that love their knives. I am a new member as well. I know what you mean about the free forearm enhancement. I started with the 20" AK too, it is my only HI blade so far. Hopefully that will change soon. I look forward to hearing your input from a martial arts background.
