Hi all.

I just picked up my first Hinderer from the secondary market a few days ago. For the past five years I have been focussing on CRK`s, and my EDC has been a large Sebenza. Since I liked the design of the XM18 though, I`ve figured I had to give it a try. So I have been on the lookout for a few months, and finally came accross a decent priced one a few days ago. I was lucky enough to be able to pick it up, and so now I am the proud owner of a Gen 3 3.5" XM18.

The knife was unused/mint and came with a smooth CF scale as well as translucent green and a brown scale. I decided to go with the brown one for now, as the CF is a bit too smooth for my taste. So far I really like the XM!

Anyway, here are some photos :

I've only been a member of the Hinderer club for a short while myself. Welcome! Enjoy that XM.
I'm a big fan of the brown btw.

Congratulations akubra. Really nice looking knife. The brown scale goes well with it . I can't wait for mine.

Thanks guys. I`m afraid the photos are a bit misleading when it comes to the color of the scale. It is actually a slightly darker brown and doesn`t have as much of a red hue.

Very nice pictures. Welcome to a very awesome experience. I like knives of all kinds but place Hinderers at the top of the list.

Glad to hear you like it. I'm waiting on an identical looking hinderer just a tad larger. The xm 24 with coyote brown scales. Should have it this week. How is the detent on your xm 18?

I feel the same. Picture don't do Hinderers justice. One in hand , you really can appreciate the thought that went into making it. I have since sold off all my other folders and now carry Hinderer only.

Certainly simplifies leaving the house in the morning. Good choice!

I actually like the caramel-ish color in the photo better than it`s actual color.

It hasn`t accidentially opened on me yet, and I think the detentball is strong enough to prevent that. ;) The dentent is not quite as strong as on my Sebenzas though. But I guess if it were, it would make it harder to use the Flipper.

Congrats on the knife! Now you know what the fuss is all about :D

Yeah, I do, and I dig them! What I don`t get though, is how people will ask for up to 3 times of their actual retail price. Thats just crazy!
But I guess the limited availability is good in case that one should ever need to sell one..... . ;)

I just received my new XM18 with OD Green Scales last week. It is a non flipper. i paid $720 for this Gen. 4. Is this price in the ball park?? How is the flipper in respect to taking it in and out of your pocket? I steered away from the flipper, because I didn't want it hanging up on my pockets. Have you had any problems with this? Anyone feel free to way in on this question. I want to order a flipper as well. On another note, is the Gen. 4 inferior to the other generations. Some people have alluded to the fact, that it is more mass produced. I am proud of my Gen. 4, however it would be nice to know that it received the same attention by Rick as the others. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

I pocket carry flippers. No issues for me.
If you are worried about a tip up carry, push the knife to the back of the pocket so the blade cannot open till removed from the pocket. I do this on occasion, but also carry it mid-pocket w/ my keys at the back of my pocket. Still no issues. And yes, you can still access smaller items that rest at the bottom of your pocket.
Production XMs are better than good. Gen 4 3.5 XM 18s have some revisions over previous generations. These guys pay attention and improve on things. Nothing wrong with earlier models or customs, I'd love to own several of each. But if I had a super rare item, it would generate a bit of use/keep prestine anxiety. To answer the attention question, obviously production models see less personal attention than a custom hand-ground piece.

Thanks for your help!! I am going to order a flipper. The ZT 560 has been released. I think I might give this a shot. I Love that knife and its price of $260 is very attractive. I wonder how much more quality is pumped into the XM 18 Gen. 4, than the ZT 560. Simply put, some of the Hinderers have become production knives. Is it that much different than the ZT production? Is it worth $500 more?? Don't get me wrong, I love my Hinderer!! I just wanted some feedback. Thanks again in advance.

Huh? Where was it ever alluded that the Gen 4 is inferior to other generations? If you are comparing a full custom XM versus one with a production blade, obviously there is a difference in the production of the blade, but the rest of the knife is the same and they are fantastic. All Hinderer knives are giving the same attention to detail, assembly and are sharpened by hand by Rick whether having a custom or a production blade.

The Gen 4 XM-18 3.5" had one significant change, the stop pin location was moved (largely to facilitate more potential blade shapes than the previous stop pin location would allow).

Discussing secondary market pricing is generally poor etiquette in a manufacturer's forum.

Thank you for you quick, honest, and informative answer. I will exclude pricing in any of my further discussions. In my quest for knowledge before I ordered my first Hinderer, I found all types of conflicting information. I am glad to have found a professional sight with sound information. I do value your input, and again apologize for my monetary references.

I appreciate your attitude and humility.
I choose to ignore specific price conversation and focus more on value vs. worth.
As for the XM compared to ZT 560/1, they are different. Bottom line.
I have 2 ZTs on order because I feel they are of very good design and materials; made by people who take pride in their work.
Alas, my XMs will be my EDC blades over any other. It took a while for me to discover Hinderer knives, a bit longer to actually get one, and since day 1 of ownership they have been my most reliable folder.
Be sure to add some pics of your flipper to the photo thread once you get it.

I don`t have issues carrying the flipper in my front pocket. I carry tip up, and the knife sits in the rear corner of my pocket. As Need To Know said, this keeps the knife from opening accidentially.
