My first home made knife

<sigh>
Honor in your word and being taught not to lie by your parents is failing these days it seems.

It isn't just kids these days i can assure you. This is just a kid wanting a few moments of "fame" and at least he isn't trying to pass it off on anyone as a custom handmade knife for $$$. It does smell bad though anyways.

In the glare of the window I see an adult taking the picture. If your just trying to get some laughs and to see if master makers would believe you. . I first see a knife that a skilled maker would make and then see para cord wrapped aimlessly around the handle. I am a firm believer honesty is the best policy and teach my own kids that are now grown up those basics of life. MY first knife hade 20 pictures of different steps of creation. There is no shame of learning on a blank just tell it like it is and people will help you . kellyw

Thats where I saw the design

Are you saying you saw the design, profiled the blade to look EXACTLY like the kit, including the handle shape, pin holes, and thumb grooves? And when you sent it out to be ground, they ground it to the EXACT height as the kit knife?

Like has been said, there is nothing wrong with starting out with a kit, but don't lie to everyone about it.

Guys I am really torn by this thread! I was momentarily in awe, and then begin to be suspect about what I was seeing!

If this young man has a genuine interest in knife making then that's great. We have all stretched the truth at least once in our lives so he needs to learn some lessons on this venture.

First lesson, honesty is the best policy! If you tell a whopper, it will come back to bite you! I learned along time ago telling a story usually requires telling another to cover the things that that didn’t make sense in your first story and pretty soon the story becomes so confused it's hard to remember what the original story was.

If you really want to learn knife making then learn from this. Man up and tell that this was not entirely a true story! That is something hard for most grown men to do! You will only feel bad for a little while but, the feeling you get from there on out is indescribable. You will now have a clean slate on which to write your entire future.

Crawl, walk, and then run. There is nothing wrong with starting with a blank and making it your own. There is more than likely a knife maker in your area that would be willing to help you get your start! A young man like you would have an entire lifetime to become one of the best knife makers out there! There is one thing about making of a knife. It becomes a vision into who you are, and the continued improvement of each successive knife speaks volumes about the person inside of you!

I just took a look at your profile and I must say I find the sections of “your interests” and “your occupation” a little disturbing. If you are serious about knife making you might want to rethink them! The ability to straighten out the story and moving forward lies in your hands now!

I'll have to agree with the gents here.

Authenticity brings far more praise....
And being authentic is really easy to detect with websites like tineye and such.. photo recognition goes a long way in telling you other places the same picture is hosted or tagged.

On another note, there is a lot of room for improvement with the handle wrap. Youtube or ehow as well as google can be your best friend, there's unlimited web resources to learn from.

This reminds me of back when I was in grade 9 in english class. The teacher gave us an assignment to write a story...whatever we wanted to write about. I am at my best when it comes to being creative and someone actually gives me an outlet for it. I was so tired of writing essays about other books or stories, but I was really excited to write my own finally. Anyways, I wrote a short story that was kinda like a horror theme. I worked for hours on that story... After submitting the paper to my teacher, he marked it as a 0% and handed it back. I was pretty choked about getting the zero and after asking him why, he said it was because I obviously plagiarized or copied it out of some book. He couldn't believe that I could write something like that. Anyways, it took my parents going down to the school and explaining to the teacher that I had actually written the whole story by myself right in front of them... Well, I ended up getting 100% on the story and the teacher read the story out in front of the whole class.....

That may or may not pertain to the person or knife in this thread, but it just goes to show...sometimes people can do some amazing things if they are only given the chance. That was one of the reasons why I also liked art class.:D I can paint pretty nice oil paintings of wildlife and such, comparable to Robert Bateman (a famous wildlife artist) even, but I found I like making knives better. Funny though...my paintings can compare to some of the best wildlife artists in the field, but my knives certainly don't compare to some of the best knifemakers in the field....Maybe that's why I like it though, gives me a challenge.

LOL Good thread. Great job on that blade kid. I'm impressed.

Sorry I couldn't make a w.i.p thread.

Not a problem. We understand how that would have been tough to work out.

You see, we didn't just fall off of the turnip truck-YOU did!

C'mon man, I'm a young maker, and certainly still an amateur...but I did not get there my lying. I expect that such a well made blade, "made by you" would receive an equally well made cord wrap. If I were you, which I'm not, I would come clean. Just admit to a white lie, and we can all get along and help you make your own knife one day. I certainly hope that whomever took the photo of you with "your knife" did not see you lie openly on the internet. Maybe some children should have restricted internet access...

take care,
Brook

Just FYI- that reflection in the window is his own... he's standing in front of his computer's web-cam taking these pics.

I was about that age when I got started.

Wipe the slate clean and get off to a good start :)

I was about to say, DAMN THATS WAY BETTER THAN MY FIRST KNIFE!

DA SWAMPMONSTA, these guys are a bunch of really understanding and respectful dudes, best jump out of the hole you've dug and start anew.

Hey DA SWAMPMONSTER, everybody makes mistakes, so swallow your pride and admit that that is a kit blade. Then if you would like you are welcome to come to my shop and I will let you use my equipment (under supervision) to put some handle scales on your blade. Heck I'll even supply you with your choice of scales from my supply of handle materials. I will also start you on your way to profiling and grinding your own blade. I live about 2-3 hours from cutoff. So if this sounds like something you would like to try have one of your parents call me @ 318-339-8290. All you have to do is promise to be honest about your future work. Let me know what you think.

Theres no adult involved in those pictures. Those be webcam pictures. And its pretty obvious from this picture too.

Kid, I'd swallow my pride and take advantage of this offer if I were you. He's not even asking you to come on here and detonate yourself publicly. Have one of your parents call him. There's no reason to avoid a website that is an unmatched wealth of knowledge or give up what could be a great opportunity just because you got outed one time. It seems like everyone here is going to let it go as long as there's no repeat.
