My first impressions of the BK5

Well I have only had my bk5 for a month now. It was a becker i wasnt in a rush for because i dont find it visually pleasing. But i saw a good deal on the exchange and knew that acquiring all the beckers was a must so jumped on the opportunity. After stripping it, acquiring a sheath and being busy w/ a new addition to the family, I have only got to use it twice. Once grilling and once clearing some forestry (vines, shrubs, bushes). The 5 worked awesome manning the grill. The 5 prob wasn't the best choice for the trail work but I was eager to have some fun with it.

My early opinion of it is that it is more of a task specific tool than I am used to with my other beckers. Though the other beckers rank higher in versatility, I think the 5 will out perform on slicing, cutting, fileting, skinning, food prep, etc. For the trail work, fire prep, and other camp chores the 5 will prob take a back seat to the 16, 2, 10, 7, 9.

Just my early on .02 but I could see it changing as my skills with the 5 increase.

I like the 5 but it really just seems too big for a knife delegated to slicing and food prep, etc.
I am thinking of trading it off for the bk15, I just ordered a bk9 and I think it would be the perfect combo.

Actually the Camillus BK-5 was more substantial, so you're not imagining things - I have both and I do prefer the Camillus version.
Slightly longer blade, slightly thicker stock and the Grivory slabs were thicker = a much more beefier feeling knife overall.

The Ka Bar version is even more "finesse" and camp prep oriented. Still plenty tough.

Interesting story. The only knife I've hated since I've begun acquiring Beckers is the Schrade SCHF10; which I had to check out when I saw a 2 or 3 Youtube reviewers imply it was as good as the BK2. In my view it wasn't even close. I hated it and just a few moments ago gave it to my son who doesn't seem to hate any of the knives I give him.

Earlier I commented to T1 that some people had urged the BK9 upon me but no one had urged the BK5. Since that time a few people have made up for that.

My wife is a semi-invalid and I do all the cooking now. I'm not very good at it, but I'm learning. While reading your note I had a mental image of myself standing in the kitchen whipping a BK5 out of its sheath.

It will make you feel like a kitchen samurai...or an iron chef... It is my favorite and most used Becker.

I used it to cut up the veggies and pepperoni for pizza tonight, pretty spectacular tool for the job. (Pizza was pretty good too. ;))
I will probably keep it an just get a bk15 after all. I have to say, despite my misgivings about it, there's no doubt in my mind it's probably the best looking Becker.
