I'm going to have Greg Neely go over it but I think it is a good prospect for submission toward obtaining my JS rateing. It's just good'ol 5160, some really nice American walnut, nickel silver collar with my favorite wagon wheel tire iron guard except I threw some nickle sheet in there with it along with a few folds and twists so it has these silver streaks in it. I thought it looked pretty.

Great looking knife. The best part is, the blade ain't damascus!;) :D

Edited to add;I'm definitely having reading comprehension problems lately. ;)

I think you had better send that to me before you submit that one and it fails you.

I like the whole package, and I really like the fact that you used something other than the expensive woods for the grip. That walnut looks great! You want some more?

How about some pretty cherry?

Terry Dodson:

I forgot to say, it is "fire blued" I put it in my little kiln at 400o or so and it turns a bright beautiful blue. I wish you could see it before it has any oil or WD-40 on it because it's sooooooooo cool looking. A little oil makes it look a more purple color.

Mike Hull:

Funny you should say that, some of my best knives I've got ready are "damned-ascus"! And of course, I can't use'em for the JS judging.

Doc Hollywood:

First of all, I'm sorry I never got your email but I've figured out why. My profile email here on the forum is an old one from early last year. I still use that ISP for service here at my store though and when I discovered what was up, I called them on the phone and ask if they'd journal the mail from that old account into my present one. He said "all 400 messages?" hmmm.. I told him just to delete them, mostly junk mail I'd bet but it would have taken all day to get'em on my current email address! Anyway, next time you send me a message, I'll get it :) As for wood, yea I like the Walnut, I've been getting the highly figured stuff from a custom stock maker; what do you have? As for Cherry; what kind if any figure does it have? I've never used any of it myself.

Danbo:

Sorry for not having said so sooner but it was nice to meet you at the show, whish I could've stayed longer and had a beer or something but my dad and giirlfriend had seen all they were going to see in about an hour! I had a good education that Saturday just the same. I wanted to find out how high the bar really is; I did, and also I found out it moves sometimes for some people.
As for my new bowie,do you see shades of Craig Cammerer??(sp?) I was impressed with his knives at the show. Who was the maker of the really nice Maple hafted knife you bought?, from the guy behind your table??

regards and thanks to all,
mitch

Someone please correct me if I am wrong. I believe the ABS has really started to frown on damascus being anywhere on any journeyman knives. I think you should question Ed Caffrey about this since he is normally a judge for journeyman. If I am wrong here at least I tried. By the way, nice knife.

Yep you are right Bill.

Sorry Mitch but Bill is right In the last few seminars that have been held The ABS guys have said that they really don't want to see damascus any where on JS test knives. May Jerry Fisk will see this thread and give you an opinyon.

That is a very nice knife.

Mitch, I tested last year and had some Damascus guards on my knives and they passed OK and no one said anything about changing the rules this year unless I missed something.
The ABS rules state that no Damascus be used in the blade on a JS test knife. Damascus can and did get used in the guards and butt caps last year. Just make sure that there is no inclusions or cold shunts in the Damascus because they will judge whatever you submit, be it good Damascus or bad.

Anything you lay on the table will be judged, thats why you don't want to over do it and include the sheath and a lot of extra frills. Just remember they will judge whatever you lay on the table good or bad.

Nice looking knife by the way!!! The picture of the guard looks like it has small holes in it. That might just be the picture but if it's not then reconsider laying it on the table. Good Luck !!!

I have some black walnut, and will look for figured stuff, and I have some cherry, and will again look for figured stuff. if nothing else the cherry can be stained and laquered to a beautiful warm red.

I will have to dig out a block of it and finish it the way I do walnut, and show you what I mean. I use nothing special (but elbow grease, good stain in the color I want, sandpaper down to 600 or so, and good laquer or whatever you wish to seal it with), and my wood always comes out with some very unique effects in the grain that I have had people ask me how to bring out.

I was interested in one of those pistachio blades you made. Do you have any left? Do you have any of that wood left? Do you have a block big enough for a stick tang knife?

Damascus is not allowed in JS blades! There is no mention of any other part of the knife in the rules for testing. Just the blades are mentioned on the test rules ont he site. I have looked them over a thousand times.

Very nice. The collar and guard add a elegant touch. :)

Man that is a nice knife! Great job Mitch and best of luck with the testing.
Regards,
Greg

Mitch!!! Man that's just purty as all getout. Good luck with your judging but I have no doubt you'll be passed with flying colors. Another great addition to the JS ranks - Coming right up.

Sure wish I could be there to see it!

Hey mitch,

Awesome, the handle shape is great, also guard is pretty. Good luck with the test, I am sure you're going to succeed. The wood is something also...

best luck :)

I was told you automatically fail this year if you have any damascus fittings on your knife. I got friend out in reno that is pretty upset about it, because now he dosn't have the time to remake five knives in time to be judged this year. I got to put it off another year because my job got in the way. great knife by the way. But I would send a picture to Ed and ask right now if it is ok before you get bad news in atlanta. Better safe than sorry.

Man, that's a fine looking knife Mitch.
I was going to test for JS this year and I ONLY use damascus fittings  I guess I need to look into this.

There is a little ambiguity on the rules page. There is no doubt that you cannot test with any damascus BLADES... but fittings are always the question.

Most MS that I've asked have said to go without ANY damascus on ANY part of the 5 test knives.

Atlanta is too expensive of a trip, and it's too important to ME, to do anything contrary.

No offense Mitch, but if you don't call forge welded and twisted material damascus, what would you call it? Whether it's mild steel/nickel, wrought/nickel, or tool steel/tool steel... it's all damascus when it's laying on the table in the judging room. And you won't be in there to tell them otherwise.

Greg has a real good eye... he's a good one to ask.

Best of luck Mitch! :)
