I decided to buy myself a couple of knives for my birthday...one was a Ken Coats Custom and was on the Traditional page, the second was this Karambit. I had thought about one of these for some time and finally decided if I was going to get one then it would be a nice one. I ordered this custom from a Thai maker and it finally arrived today and I am just thrilled with it. The steel is from Alabama Damascus here in the US and the scales are mastodon ivory. The wave catches on my pocket and opens the knife very nicely and it nestles into the hand perfectly. I'll let the pics do the rest....

Sweet!

I went thru a very short and fast interest phase in kerambits years ago... but lookin' at this one brings the "ME WANT" back out of me.

Did you provide the materials for your Thai knifemaker, or were they standard options?

They were the standard materials he uses. Alabama Damascus is very popular in Thailand judging from the number of makers there using it. I have been playing with this for about an hour now. From the pocket I just hook it with my pinkie...it slides out and opens and just rotates into my hand....this thing is slick!

Beautiful knife! Not a fan of the karambit style but I can appreciate fine workmanship.

I played with the knife just a bit after my son brought dinner over--he keeps his dad well fed:))

It is a neat knife and very nicely made.

okay ya great looking blade got me going. could someone drop me some links for a hawkbill orkarambits? the cheap one to mess arouund would be a good start
thanks

Most of the commercial makers do a karambit these days it seems...You can go cheap with something like a MTech or high priced like the Emerson...or there are prices in between as well. On E-bay just put karambit in the search window and you will see all kinds of makes and prices.

Absolutely stunning knife! I have to wonder if the maker had permission from Mr. Emerson to use his design, though

What makes you think Emerson designed it? Here is one of the same general design that is over 100 years old. I have seen Emerson's karambit and other than general pattern shape they aren't the same.

This design is ancient...

I may be wrong,.but I think he was talking about the wave.

The knife in question is not just any Karambit, it is an Emerson clone with fancier materials, period.

The design is a complete copy of the Emerson model right down to the wave and the oval shaped hole. As said, if he had Ernie's permission to make it, complete with the wave patent and everything, then it's ok. If he did it without consulting EKI, it's not ok.
