Hi all,

Since last Nov. when I made up a knife style for myself like old time camper and hunter Dall DeWeese. I have been wanting to make up some other old time camper and hunter style knives.

Well I finally made another one or should I say 2. I got a couple of Kepharts made up and have been using them.

Over at the Bushcraft USA, forum there was a fellow that posted a link to the real knife that Horace Kephart used. Here is the pic that I took with my camera from off the site.

After I seen that picture of Kepharts knife I was like man, I am going to make me one roughly like that. Well it turned out to be 2 One with a orange G-10 handle

and one with Elk antler for its handle

I Like using the knives I make for normal knife cutting chores. I like to eat. No surprize there most do lol. So using my knife for helping to prepare my food is just every day stuff. In the next several pics I am using the Orange handled one for cutting up some fruits and veggies while in the kitchen.

In these pics I used the Elk Antler Kephart for splitting a Birch tree branch and then made up some fuzz sticks and carved a notch in one of the sticks.

In this pic I did some more veggie cutting with the Elk antler handled one.

So far I am really pleased with the way these 2 knives have handled and with what cutting chores I have done. I did not get the pics, but I tell ya, these knives really do well at spreading the peanut butter on some crackers.

The blades lengths are 4.25" long. the handles are 4.25" long also.
the orange handled one is made out of 0-1 steel and is 3/32" thickness.
The Elk antlered one had a 1/8" thick blade and is 0-1 steel also.

I just finished the orange handled one on monday and the Elk handled one this morning, so I have not really gotten to use them much. But over the next few weeks I plan to use them alot for my cutting chores in the kitchen, out in the woods and around the farm.

Processing any game will not be till next fall and into winter, but untill that time for other cutting chores I think this one is a keeper.

Anyways, I can see why Horace liked this knife design, for his cutting chores from camp to kitchen it really does a great job.

Hope you joyed the pics and commentary.

Bryan

PS. Next Knife design to try out will be from another old time camper
E. Kreps. I have the design look alike down on paper, now to put it into steel and for the handles on that one. I am thinking It will look pretty cool
with elk antlers for the handles. Any thoughts ?

Those look really good Bryan. The Elk handles look sweet, but I'm a bit partial to the orange myself :D

All those food pictures are making me hungry! Spent almost all day doing homework. Time to make some burgers or something.

Enjoying the warm weather we've had lately? It's about time we got to see the ground!

Bryan.... I'm not a Kephart fan, but that elk handled one is about the best I've seen in this design.... truly.... you nailed it with your interpretation, bro!

Those Keps are great looking !! I normally don't like orange-handled knives , but for some reason , yours is just awesome !! I reckon the orange is easy to spot in the bush though.

I've spent a fortune on blades lately , but once the bank is full again I may give you a call on a Kephart. ( orange perhaps :) Your dimensions seem ideal for a GP bush knife.

the elk one looks like a amazing knife. if you decide you need to get rid of it let me know sir. very well done :)

Wow I love that Elk one, how do ya like it compared to your Dall DeWeese knife ?

Ps. I always love your pics Bryan !

They both turned out great. I think the kephart shape is about the best all around field knife.

Very nice brother!! My old man would have never taken that elk one off his belt. Love the stag man looks like it has some grip. Makes my barkie kephart green with envy.
I am liking thinner blade stock in 4 to 7 inch range lately.

I have never used one, but have looked at a lot of pics, I agree with tknife, it should do the job well with the design of blade it uses.

Congrats!

Brian, we have a lot of great guys making great knives here, and I mean no slight to any of those good men making Kepharts in any way, as I think the world of all of them, but a "Breeden Kephart" just really rings a bell with me. The basic, all-'round, no BS functionality of the "Keppy" (a pattern I love) executed by Bryan Breeden is something of a natural mix with your basic, all'round, no BS workmanship. It made my day to see you did a Kephart and I think Mr. Kephart himself would be glad to have his name associated with yours. I like all the guys' Kephart renditions and am happy to see you threw in your two-cents worth. It's a fine example of a fine pattern - beautiful.
