My First Kephart/s.

Hi all,

Wow is all I can say. Thank you all very much for the very kind words.

I did not know that there was a museum of Kephart Artifacts. I knew there was other makers that were making what they called Kepharts. But when that fellow over at bushcraft usa posted that link in which Horace Kepharts knife was pictured and when I saw it, there was something in my being that I new right off that was and is one of the best designs for the
woodsman, hunter, and trapper, that I have ever seen. It just really spoke to me I guess you could say.

I new that I wanted one with a orange handle since I spend a fair amount of time in the woods since I have a tree cutting service. If I drop or set my knife down a Orange handle really does show up better.

After I made that Dall DeWeese pattern knife

for a friend of mine in Canada. After I got that Deweese pattern knife done I new that I had to make a kephart design with elk antler for the handles also. I will be carrying and using this one and the E. Kreps knife pattern
that I have drawn up, but not made up yet, along with another DeWeese pattern knife I am going to make after the Kreps knife is done.
I am planning on really testing these 3 designs out this year, for the woodcrafting and woods bumming that I do.

Well Rocketbomb, Thanks and yes you know me and the color orange lol
yes I was enjoying the warmer weather we were
having lol. This rainy weather really sucks.

magnussen, Thanks, I tell ya until I saw the real kephart knife I did not really care for the ones I had seen either and that is why I never made up a look a like, To read your comments is really a honor.

Paleo joe, thanks.

Hiwa, thanks and if and when you might like to have a kephart design knife like these just let me know. I would be glad to make you up one.

Payette rucker, Thanks I am glad you like it too.
vic2367, thank you.

rockywolf, thanks man.

grunt soldier, thanks. Yea If I ever get rid of it I will let you know lol.

Pitdog, thanks man, well as to camparing the feel and how I like the kephart and the DeWeese knife. I like the Kephart better. But on a scale of one to 10 the kephart is a 10 and the DeWeese is in the 8 or 9 range they both really feel awesome to me anyways lol. Now when I get the E. Kreps look a like pattern done it might be in the 10 range too. What I have drawn up is really got me itching to get it done this weekend :D. After the Kreps knife is done I will let you know for sure about it vrs the kephart.
Pitdog here is a pic of the DeWeese and the Kephart together. just for your enjoyment.

Mannlicher, you know that is a thought. Selling knives might work out lol.

Tknife, thanks man, Yea like I said earlyer in this post that I really did not care for the kephart designs that I have seen so far, but when I saw the real one I was like Oh yea that is first class all round field knife for the woodsman, hunter, trapper. I did put a bit more belly on both of mine though and I like that better, It really adds to the over all look and the cutting of that part of the blade I think.

mymindisamob, thanks, I really like you Awesome pic.

Brad, thanks. For you to say that about your dad makes me feel pretty darn good. yea you are correct the antler handles really do have great grip and I was suprized about the feeling I got when and get when handlling these knives. I have not carved for a long time yet with them but what I have done so far I am really pleased with it.
You know I like thin knives and thicker knives and since I carry both and use both. I know they have there places.

Revolverman357, thanks, That sounds great let me know if I can ever build you knife. It would me my honor to do so.

Ia woodsman, thanks and yes I will have this one and hopefully a couple more when we are able to meet up. Terry, I really like that you think the elk one is the bomb lol. Meeting up with ya I think will be a grand time.

PastorMarko, thank you very much.

Jeff H. old buddy, thanks for the kind words man. The way you write and the way you say the things you do just about makes me blush lol. I did not know that you were such a fan of the Kephart design. It really makes me happy to know that you like this design that I made up. As said before If I had not seen the real knife that Kephart used, I would not have made one up unless a customer had sent a design for me to make up for them.
Also tell Dee, hi from Kathy and me :D

Again all, thanks for the kind words,

Bryan

Excellent work, Bryan. I've never really liked the old-time style knives, but your Kepharts are gorgeous.

Doc

Love both the Deweese and the Kephart with the Elk antler scales. Just gorgeous bro:thumbup:

...I'm not a Kephart fan...

Rick, this is W&SS. Around here that kind of talk is heresy. Watch it. ;)

Bryan, nice interpretations of a proven classic. Gotta agree with the others that the Elk version is very nice.

Hi all,

Caine, thanks.

Doc, thanks man. Like I said if I had not seen the real Kephart knife, I
had no plans on making up a Kephart, but after seeing the real one I was like yea I like that lol.

I made a Elk antler tipped firesteel for a matching set up.

6shooter, thanks. I am really pleased with the way the antler turned out and how it feels in hand. How it that (SERE 5.5) knife of yours doing?

Bigcountry, as to the comparing them. Mike I think the Warthorn is a
combat/survival/ knife and the kephart is a woodsmans( hunter and trapper) knife all the way.

This is a knife design for doing what the old time woodsmen did. The way they talked about what they did back then, like, it is always open and get-at- able, skinning and processing game and fish, cutting bacon, and slicing there fry bread or bannock what ever you want to call it, peeling spuds, cutting string and making shavings for the fire. having and using a fixed blade will save and preserve the pocket knife from the wet and messy jobs of cleaning game and fish and food preprep.

E. Kreps describes one thing also besides all that Horace kephart said, but when on the trap line a fixed blade knife will really shine over a pocket knife because when setting traps in cold weather one frequently finds use for a knife, and to pull off the glove and and search in a pocket for a the jackknife, and the open and use it is with rapidly stiffening fingers is far from pleasent.

With a fixed blade you do not even have to remove the glove to get at your knife and use it.

With this knife design I do not see kephart or E. Kreps moving through the woods like a Marine or soldier might stalking a ememy soldier and sticking them with this type of knife. Now the Warthorn design, Heck yea I can see that knife design as a ememy killing tool for close combat.

Rotte, thanks, Yea this design really shines, I think too.

Well Take care all,

Bryan

Well...you know how my knife tastes run, and that I'm not a big Kephart fan, but those look great Bryan! I especially like that Elk handled one, even not being a Kephart fan I'd be proud to carry that one to the woods bro, great job!

Mistwalker, thanks, lol yea I know you are not the biggest kephart fan lol
I was not not either until I saw the real kephart knife like in the pic I posted of it.

But when I saw it I knew I had to make one or two for me. This knife design is really a sweet design for what Horace. I can see why he chose it.
It really is great for cutting sticks, slicing bacon, and with the belly it really would works for skinning and cleaning fish just fine, and peeling potatos just fine and some fruit too lol. heck even holding food on the blade and eating off it works just fine. the handle design still has enough for the fingers to be nice and secure if you had to stab with it so if you did hit bone for gear or what ever you can feel confidently that your hand is not going to go upon the edge. Kephart chose a great design for his wood roaming.

I tell ya the more I use and work with this elk antler the more I am impressed with it. I used it this last weekend for slicing bacon and spreading butter on my banoock. Even just making shavings was a pleasure.

Here is the sheath I made for it and the firesteel.

Take care,

Bryan

Bryan, the knife is great. I haven't had nearly enough bush time, but it's been seeing plenty of work in the kitchen, where it does an excellent job. I'll get that review up eventually, I promise ;)

Looks a lot like the knife I made from some O1, not quite as wide, and the tip is a bit more pointy. I need to heat treat it and it will be ready to shape the scales.

thread resurrection to torment me damn it why why why :) ok now that i am done with that. i can't wait i have one of these on order from bryan. i tried to buy this one with the stag handle and damn him and his stubbornness he wouldn't sell it to me. still one of my favorite kepharts for sure

Hi all,

exodus125, Thanks. I am glad to hear that you like them Kepharts.
Say I looked at your site and I hope I sent the e-mail right. If you do not get it right Please PM. or contact me at
tacklebreeden@yahoo.com. I would love to chat with on the phone and call you if I could.

Grunt soldier, Man I am sorry about the thread being brought up again:eek: ;)

But I do not have control over the others for bringing up this thread, I sure hate to see anybody tormmented. I will get you one made up but in time sorry for that. I just have put the knife making on the back burner since I moved.

I allmost feel like a heel for not selling that Elk antler Kephart
( LIke I said ALMOST) to you. But I just enjoy using that knife to much
and the orange handle one I made to.
I think they are the best ones I have made for my woodsbumming that I do.

Take care all,

Bryan

Brian-

any plans for making a Kephart Companion?

Kephart_Small_Knife.sized.jpg

the fish scalers could be optional. not everyone needs or wants that feature, but a smaller "bird and trout" type knife could work well with the larger blade,,, at least Horace Kephart thought so.

When are we gonna see that kreps pattern knife and a shot of all three together. I know you'll make one in orange but I think it'd be cool to see all three together with elk on all three also.

David

Hey man i really like your research before running a project. It's a matter of respect vs history.
Nice work indeed! The stag one is fantastic.

Nice work. The kephart pattern is hard to beat as an around using knife. Not sexy looking at all, it just gets the job done.
