My first Khukuri

No problem! I went to take a photo showing how I usually hold mine, but my camera died. I will post in a little while once it's done charging.

Very beautiful blade on that CAK, I have one of my own in black horn and love it very much. I think staining the wood a dark color is a good idea, I've seen some people do it with great results. Also seen some file down the ring with again nice results though it's not something I would do personally, just love the traditional look of them(M43 model excluded) even though it can be uncomfortable at times.

Phill, that's very close. Thanks. The victorian ones were loooong kinda sirupati lookin' khuks with very angular pockets for the karda. That's the concept, though.
Tx-when you chop, grip mostly with thumb and first two fingers, then snap your ring and pinkie fingers shut at the last second. Gives the blade that last little whip into the target.

Nice looking knife bro. I called HI myself(Reno) but they never called back so got two ordered from Tora, hope I'm not disappointed.I've got a Kabar thats new and used it at work.Like any kukri it makes chopping so easy.I'm new to kukris also ,the Kabar I got is only about 23 to 25 days old.Quit honestly ,the only thing that bothers me about HI is them doing rituals and blessings with knives for sale.I dont mean to sound biased or mean anything bad it just kinda gives ME the spooks. I'm a little supersticios.I'm not condeming them or anything as I dont know about their beleifs and dont want to know. I do kinda want one of their Angkholas tho.Looks like you could stain that wood somehow.I like a darker wood to but there is certainely nice looking as it is.

How long did you give Auntie to call you back? It is customary to allow 24hrs as she is a one woman show there in Reno and has plenty of other customers to service as well as packing and shipping of orders from this forum and the store along with many other things pertaining to the running of the business.

As for the puja blessings of the khukuri. They are only blessed that they may never be drawn in anger and that they serve their owner well.
Nothing spooky there. Just good wishes.

As for Tora? The owner of that brand was banned from this site long ago for violating numerous site rules. He also chose to and continues to berate Uncle Bill (the founder here) long after his death when he can no longer defend himself.
Do a search of this site using the usernames sirupate, yoshi, ghurka, limbu.
He also did a recent purge of all older posts on his forum to remove the myriad of complaint threads about moldy sheaths, rusty product, sawdust filled handles, improper heat treat that he sold his customers at full price.
You won't find that type of shenanigans here.

So please, do not continue to mention that business on this forum.

Super hard woods are not necessarily heavy use knife friendly-ebony especially-and before you take out the ring in the grip, consider it's purpose: when you snap your hand shut at the terminus of the cut, that is a "trigger" (of sorts) that indexes your grip.

How about dyeing the actual one?

Just saying.

I don't know anything about Tora but I do know that H.I. is the real deal. This is a quality blade man. As for the blessing and all that I don't care. I'm an atheist so if mumbling a bunch of gibberish makes someone feel better more power to them. It doesn't do any good or harm as far as I'm concerned.

@olddirty, I am among the most superstitious people alive, and in HI blades there is a soul, if you are uncomfortable with steel that has a soul then you should definitely not get HI

I figure I will post one of my main interests here just because superstition

Does the M43 have a full tang? It looks like it does. If so I might just buy it in addition to the one I've got.

The M43 indeed has a full tang, one of the most beautiful and functional models Himalayan Imports has IMHO.

This is surprising to me. I also got my first kukri a few days ago, and though my first choice was wood I'm ok with the horn handle. Before even reading your post the first thing that popped into my head was wow look at the awesome handle he got! I'm a wood worker as a serious hobby, and finding figured wood can be difficult. I really hope you reconsider and keep it as is! Beautiful knife!

What the flim flam does that mean "has a soul".I dont wont no knife wit a soul, all I want is a nice peice a steel that does what I say.LOL. Karda,I just left one message at HI,but that was 2 to 3 weeks ago.I was wondering if they were out of the country maybe ,Guess I should call em once more. I ordered two of those knives from said company ,I hope I dont get jipped.Hope I didnt make that ol boy uncomfortable about mentioning their rituals, really just curious and wanted some input.

Its about the steel becoming an extension of your body , because it was built by a master ! the soul of the blade is the will put into it by the maker.

Yeah I know what u mean just horsing around. That one knife I gor from AC sure feels sweet, like an extension of your hand literally

Oldirty, I am sorry for my terse response to you previously. I'm not feeling well and due to his past and present transgressions, which are almost unforgivable to me and due to one of his shills causing strife here get pretty hard under my skin. I also tend to have issues with self absorbed, pretentious "experts" and he just almost always rubs me the wrong way. I was almost ready to forgive his long ago transgression because I hate to hold grudges. Then he recently repeated them in an earnest effort to discredit a much loved and honest man to again bolster his sales and reputation and now again I find him detestable. I hope you didn't get gypped also. Chances are you will be ok. Just be aware that he does business much differently than we do here and you may not get the same world class service and consideration that you do here.

It seems odd that Auntie didn't call you back. There are only 2 things I can think of right now that may have caused this.
Either you phone call was missed or deleted somehow or she couldn't understand your message or call back number.
It is almost always best to send her an email at himimp@aol.com so she can have the particulars in front of her to reply.

Puja's are Buddhist prayer, much like any of us would pray. Nothing spooky or nefarious, just good wishes. Here on the forum we send smoke prayer and good wishes to each other when the need arises. Our company friend and spiritual guide, the esteemed Lama Jigme actually does puja prayers for us and all our friends and customers on a routine basis. We respect all religions here, even atheism. All we ask is that everyone is tolerant, respectful and friendly with each other.

As for the "Soul" issue. Many of us believe that the finely crafted HI khukuri are not just tools or blades, but are imparted with a feeling and soul all their own during forging. It is kind of a Buddhist thing, but many here, including myself have felt it to be a real thing.

Na Karda u didnt rub me the wrong way. What happens ,happens.Anything goes wrong with a transaction and I just walk away and not mess with the source anymore.I have no reason to doubt you and at this point I dont know.I am a novice at best at this but I have been watching and reading from a lot of experts.I didnt even know what a kukri was 5 weeks ago (although I had seen pictures).I was actually looking for a self-defense weapon as I know where there are some big hogs that I hunt(250-350 maybe even 1or 2 400 to 500 lbs). One things for sure ,when I saw the kukri style blade I knew it was what I wanted. Its the only knife I know of small enough to carry hunting packing enough mustard for a 1 hit engagement.I heard and have seen myself that pound for pound a hog is the toughest animal on the planet.

yeah I imagine a HI khuk would be good for getting through a hog hide, and could dispatch one with relative ease if you had a good shot

Old Dirty, no worries on the blessing. I, as a Christian, see it as another religion/culture's way of imparting good vibes and good will upon not just the item, but also transmitted to the soon to be owner. I personally see no religious issue or conflict, just as I would welcome prayers from other beliefs in a time of need. Positive energy is positive energy:) Some people also have a problem with the cho, but I don't. Whether a religious symbol or not, which really no one knows for sure, it seems more cultural to me at this point. Considering the khukuri is a cultural/ethnic blade, the cho bothers me none.

On the soul part, I think it's much the same with any handmade object, if made with care. Unlike a Ford assembly line, I find something nice about a man hammering a blade, holding it out for examination. He notices a spot which isn't "just so", so he heats the steel until it "feels" right, and it's back to the anvil for fine tuning until it is exactly what he wants. The personal touch imparts a little of the maker into the object. Not unlike the car a high school friend had. It was a beautiful 1968 Camaro. He and his father rebuilt it by hand and, though questionably street legal:D, that car had soul!

As to the hogs, the khukuri is a great tried and true weapon. But, to many it's not much for stabbing. Some may disagree, but it was never a natural for that in my hand. I know many folks who hunt hogs with hounds stab the critters. To me, the khuk is a chopper and slasher. Just something to think about. Be safe.

Having spent many a morning trapped in the corn crib until rescued by my grandfather after he noticed I didn't come back from feeding by a nasty old mean "domestic" hog I can attest to the toughness of all hogs.
I also agree that a Khuk isn't a stabber, but if a hog comes for you, you won't be stabbing you'll be hacking. I'd employ a hack and run technique, or in my case hack and roll technique.
I come from a long line of hog farmers, still like em. Not the kind of beast you want to cuddle up to but still nice. The line sadly is pretty much gone now, markets and big outfits driving the little guys out, along with old age and medical situations causing the demise of the line.
