I'm so excited about my first khukuri (15") that I just had to tell some people who I thought would appreciate it! :) I also now have a kagas katne, both which were delivered in the most delightful way!

I'm definitely a novice and I've been reading and learning a lot here, but if anyone has any words of advice (or just want to tell me about your first khuk), I sure would appreciate it!

Thanks!

Whenever I read something like that, I wonder if I'd written anything bad in the past couple of weeks.

I hope you like the knives.

:)

Did you get a wood or horn handle?

Wow, welcome and run for your pocketbook! You're gonna have fun here in the Cantina...as well as blowing away great chunks of wood with these beauties.

Welcome to the Psycho Ward Peeps!!!!:D I've seen you around the forums so you're not a stranger anyway.;)

The first word of advice if you haven't already done so is to be sure to read the Safety Thread and take heed!!!! The FAQ's are 'goot reedin' too.

Hi Peeps. Interesting name. I've only heard it one other time in my life.

Hey, Peeps, welcome to the Cantina. Great to see you here :) I hope you enjoy your khukuris. As far as advice, I have four suggestions:
1. Read the sticky safety thread at the top of the HI forum.

2. When using your khukuri, go slowly; as silly as it sounds, the khukuri itself will actually teach you how to use it. The design may seem odd at first, but a bit of use will show you how marvellously ergonomic it is.

3. Don't be afraid to modify your khukuri. For example, if there's a sharp edge on a handle, grab some sandpaper and sand it down. If the handle develops a crack after use, grab some superglue. Your khukuri was made by a human, and it can be repaired by one as well.

4. When in doubt, ask. If you have any questions about any aspect of khukuris whatsoever--repairs, useage, customization, history, you're in the right place to have them answered. I've never met a more knowledgeable group of people in my life.

Welcome, Kat! I'm glad to see you found your way to the cantina.

I hope I'm not out of line here, but I think possible future embarrassment can be avoided if I mention up front to everyone- Peeps is a female girl woman of the opposite sex persuasion. (So watch yer lankwidge!) ;) Somehow, a lot of people seem to miss that fact in other forums. :p

Anyway, I think the idea of a Khuk swingin' sister is pretty cool.*

* Cue theme music: She's a Bad Mamma-Jamma. :D

dont let a dull khukurie fool you.

example - 12" ang khola, factory edge, wich wont cut you if you run it across your arm with the weight of the blade. if you swing it around, and you hit yourself, say, in the hand, with any momentum - it will sink in to the bone.

even if its dull as a rock, be aware of where the blade is headed, cause it'll cause some damage if something living gets in its way.

what model did you get?

Welcome Peeps:)
I must concur with the others about reading the safety thread. Khuks have a personality of their own. Some of them like to bite more than others. Trust me, I -know-;) Have fun and be careful:)

I was guessing that they are too lazy to ban us as long as we don't break anything...

Thanks for the encouragement and all the great sage advice, guys! The Cantina looks like a very welcoming place! :)

Bruise, the handle is horn. Do you have a preference, or does it depend on the khuk?

Seth, it's a BAS

MacHete, you weren't out of line at all. But surely I'm not the only "female girl woman of the opposite persuasion" here?

Thanks again, everyone. I look forward to learning a lot from you all. :)

Peeps you are not on your lonesome here we also have our own very special Ging. where are you Gin?

Peeps?

Welcome. Enjoy the variety. It's hard NOT to learn stuff here. Sometimes, it even involved khukuris, but not all that much.

Classy joint: uses respect, tolerance, and courtesy as behavior standards. The pool table tilts, though.

Dunno. I like both. I reckon that I have more horn handles than wood though. With the horn, just make sure you apply some lanolin based product to it periodically.

I used to prefer wood, but then I liked the look of the horn. Then I got a bone handled one... Just a matter of personal preference. Some folks say the horn slips in their hands. Others find that the horn is grippier in their hands. I guess you can only find out if you go and chop stuff with it.

Enjoy your stay here, but watch out for the wierdos. I guess that's most of the people here. :D

im seeing a lot of lanolin results in the search about where to get it, wich is better, but nothing about why to use it on horn... why lanolin?

Hooflex or some other brand of hoof conditioner is available at farm feed and supply stores. You can also buy a tube of pure lanolin at the pharmacy (it's for nursing mothers). Other products have lanolin content. Some folks here have used VO5, Bag Balm.... blah blah... I use a boot waterproofing goop that said it had lanolin content.

I think the logic of using lanolin went this way...

Use hooflex because it is made for hooves. Horn is sort of the same material as a hoof. The active ingredient in hooflex is lanolin. What does lanolin do? It soaks into the hoof and mosturizes it. This keeps the horn from drying out and cracking. Why not use other products with lanolin? Sure why not.

I still think Hooflex smells like Christmas.

At least that's my theory. Someone will be along shortly to correct me.

as there was no direct reason for using lanolin products besides its presense in hooflex, i will default to my use of ballistol :D

hooflex reminds me of the ranch i grew up on (1-5, plus consistent stays till about 10), mainly the horse tack shed.... (and a little bit of christmas... :p )
