Just a semantics note, but kiri means the paulownia tree ( called the Empress tree in the USA). (I think it also can mean fog)
The simple short bench knife is called a kiridashi ( pointed knife). Some call it a "dashi" for short. Dashi isn't really right either, as it means a broth made from scraps. As you see, making shortened names in Japanese isn't the same as it works in English.
