My first knife build

DMT has a 120 grit (silver colour) for skies and snowboards. That is where I start.
Then black(220), blue, red, green. Strop after green or go to a Belgian water stone first (~6000/8000grit)

If you have a triangle with a 90degree angle and the long arm is 3x the short one, the smallest angle is 20degrees

So angle blue/yellow is 90degree and yellow is 3x blue gives a 20degree angle between red and yellow.
(4 times is 15degrees)

is it really worth it to buy a diamond stone at such a low grit?? I figured the quality of the stone wouldn't matter at such low grits. but i wouldn't know

that's a handy little trick with the triangle im gonna have to remember that.

i still haven't decided how i want to set the angle for my grind but i do like your idea with a block at the ricasso. How do you keep the angle on the curve of the blade?

im still waiting for my flat rate boxes from usps so i can send my knife to peters. in the meantime i've been drawing up a couple of designs and i think i might have my next knife.

i want to make a smaller knife this time so i figured about a 2 inch blade. My problem is i have large hands so i had to find a handle shape that would work in a larger hand and this is what i came up with

ill still probably make some adjustments but this will be the basic shape of what will most likely be my next knife

A word of advice... don't just put your knife in a box and ship it off. I did that to my first blade and it poked through the box and got damaged. After that I figured out ways to protect the blade (and the postal workers). You make a temporary sheath out of hard cardboard. I do this by cutting off a slice of the side of a hard cardboard mailer, then taping the open side. Then you slip the blade into the sheath and tape the sheath onto another piece of hard cardboard that keeps it from moving around. Then I put this inside ANOTHER hard cardboard envelope along with the letter telling Peters what to do, and who to send the knife back to.

well i finally got my knife mailed off to peters (a month later) i had to re-order the boxes to a different address and i've been pretty busy lately, job finally picked up and im getting hours again between that and my girlfriend and I are moving soon so we've just had a lot to do... and we went camping lol we just got a second dog (so we figured taking her out for her first camping trip was a good excuse to go) we went to kershaw ryan it was a fun trip till the wind picked up to 50-60 mph. anyways since i dont have any progress pics on the knife for you i figured id post up a few from the trip

Well finally done with my first knife it was defiantly more work than i had originally anticipated but worth every drop of sweat (which was alot of drops lol its 103 degrees here in vegas right now). I wanted to thank everybody that has helped in this thread and throughout the whole forum im still reading and learning everyday and look forward to being a part of this community for a long time. Alright ill shut up and get to the pictures

~9 in overall about 4 1/2 blade and 4 1/2 handle

i ended up using black linen micarta or maybe it was canvas not sure. For the pins one 1/8 inch nickle silver pin and one in 3/16 inch all sanded to 2000 grit

i had the blade sanded down to 600 grit and all pretty but im not very good at sharpening and i decided to free hand the edge so there are a bunch of scratches. but on the good side i think its the sharpest ive every gotten a knife lol

one question on the handle though when it was still at 120 grit you could see the pattern of the micarta much better than now at 2000 grit is there a way to keep the pattern and still go high grit?

Great first effort. Can't help you with the micarta handle. I've never done one. How does it cut? For the next one, take the grind higher and see the difference in performance. Completing one is a great sense of accomplishment.

That's not only a great 1st knife, that is a great knife period. Wish my 1st had looked as good

thanks willie it cuts well but i do think the having the bevels so low is holding it back somewhat so yeah i will defiantly bring my grind up next time and im going to try to get the width behind the edge thinner as well. i hadnt really done much research into edge geometry and honestly i still need to do more. and yes definitely feels good to have finished one especially since i started it in march lol i just kept getting lazy but thats the nice thing about a hobby i get to go at my own pace

well i ordered up some 1/8 inch 1084 because paying to get every knife i make heat treated professionally isn't in the fiances budget lol but ive been getting bored waiting and i had a free day today so here is what ive been up to today

Edit: sorry guys didnt mean to overstep my bounds

No one can sell or trade here in Shop Talk at all.
All selling is done in The Exchange. As a registered user, you can't sell items in The Exchange.
You can post a thread in Knifemaker Services Wanted requesting HT services, and state that you are willing to trade. But, makers who can do HT make their own knives, and wouldn't want a partly made blade from a beginning maker. Best to offer something they can use as a trade.

I would find a local maker and see if he would let you come over and teach you some things while doing the HT on your blades. There are quite a few makers in your area.

Filling out your profile might be a good idea if you plan on trading or getting offers of help, as it currently has no info but your location. Knowing your age, hobbies, occupation, etc. gives people a little to base things on.

Sorry about that and thanks for clearing that up I knew it was a bad idea to post ive just been getting restless waiting for steel thats doable with what I currently have the fiancee isnt likely to approve any purchases any time soon lol just getting more steel was hard enough

I had a feeling that would be the case anyway that anybody able would just rather make there own not to mention it would would be way better than anything ill be able to make. Oh well these kiridashi will just have to wait

Speaking of which I actually have tried to put more info after seeing you tell others this but I couldn't find where to put it ill look for it again. anyways thanks bladsmth and my apologies

At the top of every page there is a BLADEFORUMS header bar. In the header bar you will see the login and other info on the top right side. There is a box marked "Settings". Click that and when the page opens, you will see all the info boxes and settings down the left side. Click
Edit Profile" and make any changes or additions. Then click "Save Changes".

Everyone should update the info from time to time. I just made a few changes in mine.

I had just finished putting in hobies and what not through the edit profile option when I read your post I was wondering where to put age but now I got it.
Thanks

Just a question if you were to put scales onto a kiridashi would you still drill holes through the tang to hog out material? Or do you want the weight?

Kiridashi are so small that a little weight is usually a good thing. They are basically a skew chisel for trimming things flush and scribing. Scales are OK, but a wrap looks more fitting.

Yeah thats what I was thinking sinnce there so small. What material would you use to wrap. I figure thin and flat would look better than say paracord. Wouldnt you have to drill holes to wrap through or is the resin soaking enough to keep the cord in place?
