My first Knife, is this good

S30V Steel and a plain edge. Pretty nice choice, and everyone here agrees.

Reading the posts got me going on some other tangents, though. No doubt, I prefer a plain edge to the serrated in just about any knife. My primary use for a knife is EVERYTHING. I'm in the army, and have done several "combat" tours. The serrated knives are handy maybe one day a month. The other 27-30 days of the month, they are a maintenance headache. They are problematic to sharpen, and prone to snagging and chipping. I used up a BM AFO by only lapping the back side of the serrations. I just didn't have the time to fidle with all the serrations.

Next. The coating. I don't have ANY experience with the spyderco coating. I believe them to be similar to the others. I will comment on the BM AFO coating by saying it "looks pretty new." Once it got scratched and cut, it seemed to gather crap. Ultimatly, and satin finish would be preferable. Much easier to maintain, and looks great long after the black coating has gone south on black blades. Less than .001% of service men have any real need of a non-reflective "covert" covering. I had similar results with a Kershaw black coating.

On a side note: I was rather distraught when the folks at BM desided to make ALL their autos black combo blades. I found this our when I went the local knife shop to trade my newly issued AFO 9053SBT for an AFO 9050. There were none in stock, and a call to Benchmade by the dealer confirmed it. No more plain satin autos from BM.

Anyway, that's my experience from the field. Milage will ALWAYS vary. A knife is an intensly personal item, and you deserve the one that suits your taste and need.

I'm still researching my first (as perfect as can be) knife. For the money, check out the Spyderco UK Penknife. A lot like the Para. only no lock and way cheaper. Also the Ritter Griptilian (www.equipped.org)
Those are the two I'm looking at.
Good luck.

Judging by what he wanted last time, the 910 BM, I think he'll aim for something more tactical looking
