Kershaw skinner, picked it up on Ebay. It will be my deer hunting go to knife. I hope I don't get addicted as bad as some of you guys are. lol! Great forum, a whole lot of good info. What should I buy to keep this thing razor sharp?

You did wrong, it only goes downhill from here with the addiction lol. I personally use the Smith's 3 in 1 field sharpening system. Works great for me for only 20 bucks. Sharpmaker's great, but all I need is a fine edge, I don't freak out if it's not hair-splitting sharp :D

Nice blade. Looks like it'll make an excellent hunting knife. For sharpening, I use DMT diamond stones, and strops.

Me too - SharpMaker is a pain in the butt unless your'e working with soft stuff or have ton of time on your hands to kill and then it isn't really that great. Entry level sharpener only IMO.

AFAIC, I would go for a 2 sided strop with the black and green bark river compounds. they will help keep the knife sharp if you maintain it regularly. they are easy to take in the field too. look up brian gustad. he sells mini strops for 12 bucks shipped.

I've been looking at the DMT aligner kits are they the best type for a beginner? If so would you recommended the magnetic folding type or standard.

I free-hand sharpen all my knives, so I'm not sure it would be the best way to start for a beginner. I use the DMT bench stones mainly. I keep a couple of the duo-folds in my car and at work.

I can get my blades shaving sharp easily enough, but there are some folk here who can go far past that. :D

Defintely get the DMT Magna-guide and all of the hones. You have guided sharpening as well as the freedom to free hand with the nifty folding dual grit stones. Very handy. I love mine.

Yeah but wouldn't it help by keeping the same consistent angle vs. free hand?

For someone starting out its helpful but once your learn freehand jigs tend to be more of a pain. The aligner kit is very nice, effective and simple, will make your blade razor Sharp too with little effort. I like the magna guide kit myself because it gives more sharpening options.
