My First Knife

I have so many knives with plunge lines that aren't where I originally wanted them! Invest in a good file guide. They are with their weight in gold.

I like it. My first full tang was somewhat similar, with Birdseye maple and ebony. Not quite as nice as this, I should have spent more time planning. I spend about as much time drawing as I do making now.

The only observation I have is to be cautious about overheating the pins/tube. Once they're burnt, they're burnt. Try a hidden tang... they're pretty fun IMO.

Lol, I knew someone would catch that. I have learned my lesson the hard way!

I try to grind the majority of the pin down before installing, and if there is more than 1/16" left make sure you use a good sharp 50 or 60 grit belt to take the rest down if you grind the pins/thong holes while glued in. I grind and immediately touch the pin to absorb any excess heat into my finger. I always use a 50 or 60 grit belt to put radial 'roughness' into the pins, in case anything ever comes loose it will be less likely to just fall out, which should never happen but it is just an added measure.

It looks good and for your first it shows at least to me that you may have special natural abilities in knife making !!! Wonderful ! Frank

This is a great tip for me. I cut my pins and tube too long and after glue up I made the mistake of using a dremel cut off wheel. That gets WAY too hot.

Thank you Frank! That means a lot.
