After seeing some of the beautiful first time efforts, I feel kind of embarassed about this, but here is POS #1! Made this in my apartment with hacksaw, files, sandpaper & a little cheating with the dremel. Doing it this way is pretty educational--all the little imperfections and screwups start to accumulate into something kind of ugly.

Better than my first! I like it. What's the specs - steel, handle? What did you learn?

I included the link for those who couldn't see the pic.

Thanks for the kind words. The steel is ATS-34 (I sent it to Texas Knifemakers Supply for heat treating), and the scales are maple.

What did I learn? The importance of not filing into the scribed centerline; how difficult it is to get the plunge cuts even; and how hard it is to keep your file from scratching up the metal! There is nothing quite as irritating as moving to a higher grit and seeing all the imperfections pop out.

And somewhere along the line I began to suspect that there was a reason people were using belt sanders instead of sandpaper alone . . .

I think you're being a bit hard on yourself. Looks like a pretty good first effort to me. Certainly a lot of work if it is hand filed. The scale -- can only see one -- is beautiful. Is that stabilized maple burl?

If I could offer a bit of constructive criticism, the line of the blade, where it turns upward looks to me like a hair more material could be removed, resulting in a smoother sweep upwards. Looks like a genuine skinner to me!

Keep it up!
