Well here it is, My first completed knife. I did make and grind away two different blanks first.

This is 7.5" overall- Hollow ground O1 Tool steel, torched hardened with green/black linen micarta scales with red spacers. I've got about seven hours in it (I'm slow) now it's time to learn how to make a sheath......Richie in NC

Not to criticize people who can work quickly, but the hours show. IMHO the care and time spent in fitting and polishing really show up in a knife that simple (aesthetically, not necessarily to make.)

That's your first knife?
Pretty freaking nice if you ask me.
You say you hardened it with a torch?
How do you know when you've heated it enough?

Excellent work! That polish job is awesome. I'm glad you added the second pic, it really shows the finish.

Thanks! I heated the blade to non magnetic, it is somewhere in the middle of dark red and bright red. I use one of those telescoping pick up magnets to test once it starts to turn red. I hang the blade from a coat hanger and try to hold it at non magnetic for approx. one minute then quench in vegetable oil, after cooling temper at 400 for an hour....seems to work for me, I haven't rockwell tested but passes the file test and doesn't seem too brittle....hope this helps

Great looking grind lines. I'm still not confident enough to doa mirror polish.

Great knife. Doesn't matter if it's the first or the hundredth, it's a good, solid, clean design. Like someone else said, "the hours show.

Going for that type of finish on your first knife (and actually getting it) deserves sincere congratulations!

It's so refreshing to see a new maker demontrate true "pride in workmanship."

richtrix -- Wow! An extremely impressive beginning!

As one of those with no talent or artistic ability, I don't understand how others are so blessed. But, I admire such abilities greatly.

That is one fine looking knife! Can only imagine what you'll soon be producing.

There's just something about a knife that's clean and simple in looks that still takes my breath when it's done as nicely as this one.

Congrats!!!!!!!

And I bet you don't have a problem with the sheath either. Just make a cardboard model first and then follow it.

I just messed one up by not checking what I was doing twice before I cut. It would be a nice sheath for a southpaw.

Sheesh. You know that post I put up :Stop posting pictures here", well I think it's time you go in the corner and read it! Mirror finishes aren't my thing at all, but I can appreciate the amount of work. Trust me, seven hours on a knife isn't bad at all, assuming the use of the proper tools (like a belt grinder as opposed to files, for example!). Anyway, GREAT first effort! I'd like the knife 100 times more (and I like it a lot now) if you brought the finish back down to 600 grit and etched it to show off the temper line. Great going and can't wait to see #2!

That is nothing short of outstanding and I mean that sincerely. The ONLY constructive criticism that I may offer is to remember the effort and time and detail that you put in this first knife. IF you do that to each and every knife from here on out, you will truly be one of the premier makers. I am being as honest as I can be in that statement. There are folks that have been making knives for years and have not obtained the quality that you have in your first knife. Go for it!

Man that is outstanding. That is so clean it isn't even funny.
I wish I could do one in that length of time,Heck I usually have that much time in the hand rubbed finih alone not to mention the whole next day to do the guard and handle....Like I had said before on another post,You new guys make me want to cry and scream and pout and throw my hands up and,and,and..........
Really nice work and great pictures,
Bruce

7 hours?!?!? I put 20+ into mine and it didn't look that clean. I love the design, and that finish is AWSOME! Can't wait to see your next one!
