Trace Rinaldi's post got me all nostalgic for this thing and I went looking for a pic. It got stolen about as soon as I moved to Iowa, and I've been thinking today maybe I ought to duplicate it. Maybe I will. :)

Krept, that's a nice thing to say, thanks. I read everything about knives I could find for years, layed in bed at night thinking how to do it, finally got a grinder and some steel and took a shot at it. Voila!

Dave

Thanks for all the kind words. Wish I could tell you more about it, but I really don't remember. I made it in 1989, I think it was about 10" long. It's 440C, brass and ebony. I really liked that knife, called it my "Nick Adams" knife after the Hemmingway character, whose stories were one of my main ways of learning woodcraft when I was a kid. But nowadays, there're no woods left either... :( The more I think about it the more I think I should make it again!

Definately a keeper pattern Dave,Hope the original has bit the guy that got it more than he can count...I hate nothing worse than to have a knife grow legs and leave the shop.My Dad had one of the ones I made him Get stolen out of the house,he was really pissed off,but glad the others were put up at the time and not in his now cool display stand..
Definately make it again..

I second that sentiment. can't the stoopid fool go learn how to make a knife himself??

BUT that a sweet knife you made... very nice indeed! You should make another one, and another, and another, and another... hehehe and maybe send one over to me! LOL

DON'T STOP NOW.

I am getting ready to start my first, a skinner. May I barrow your look (for personal use only)? I like it so well I made your pic. my desk top wall paper. I'll probably use 416 for the trimmings though instead of brass because I have a bunch of 416 gotten from Douglass Barrel here in WV.

Great work, you got a future.

Hey rlinger, have at it! We all share and share alike around here. This is one of the best associations of people there has ever been, and it only gets stronger by continuing to share.

Dave

Hey rlinger, If Douglas happens to throw a heavy 30 cal Barrel in the scrap pile, send it my way!:D

Yea, I went there begging for scraps when I first got my little milling machine. He wouldn't give me anything that had been rifled but had a bunch of 1 3/8 inch dia. 416 stock that had been left over from there cuts. They cut there barrel lengths from stock that is about 15 or 20 feet long. Each scrap piece averaged between 16 and 18 inches long (solid). He said you can have all you can carry in one trip. I carried off 8 pieces and did not wish to go back for more.

They make superb barrels. I live about 2 miles from Douglas and have been given a cook's tour of the place twice now. I love being surrounded by all that machinery.

Wow Dave, that was some start.
Very nicely done.
I agree, make it again. It belongs in honest hands.
Regards,
Greg

This thread is over 3 years old, it has Bruce Evans and Peter Nap in it. :( I miss those guys.
