I wanted to post some pics of my first knife. I came up with the design myself. I just finished it yesterday. I made it by stock removal on a Bader grinder. It's made of ATS-34 with garolite XX handles. I have a lot of room to improve, but thought I would share with you guys. It really feels good to make your thoughts a reality. Sorry, about the low quality pics.

YES! ALL OF THE ABOVE! And it looks a h*ll of a lot better than my first knife! and my second one also I am willing to admit!;) they were from rusty files. that I filed into knives with rusty files. all of of the tools I used were from garage sales. the torch was one of those turn a handsize can of butane into torch things. :jerkit: HEY one of these days we have to have a uglyest first knife contest. :barf: for Bragging rights of course. I think there was one about 3-4 years ago but I didnt have a camera back then.:jerkit: Barker! you have to give use a top view next time so we can check on the distil taper and tang to scale fit!;) we get picky fast around here!

Jeez. Its lovely. I'm partial to smaller knives anyway, but, dang. Mine still stink, but I really love doing them.

Thanks guys for taking a look. Hopefully next week I'll have my second one done. Thanks for all the positive comments and compliments.

First knife? Bader grinder? Am I missing something? Nice job but something about those two comments doesn't fit?

Matt,
My friend has been making knives for about a year. He has a Bader grinder. He's been nice enough to let me come over to his shop to watch him. Then, he let me practice grinding with some cheap steel bars. After ginding on 4 or 5 bars to get the feel gave me some ATS-34 to work with. I had bought some handle material and corbys. I came up with a couple designs and made a template out of plexiglass. I traced on to the steel. Then cut it out and profiled on the belt grinder. You know what happens from there.

Anyway, I've been able to use his equipment to see if this is something a really like before dropping 3 to 4 grand on building a shop in my basement and getting the equipment I need. So sorry Matt if it sounds stange, but it is what it is. And Yes I'm hooked and I'll begin building a nice shop in my basement in the next couple of weeks. There will be more to come.

Sir, I made my first in 1971. For a first knife , that is exceptional!!!

very very nice. is it for sale??

Sorry, but this one is mine. I want to keep this one being my first and all. The ones to follow will be for sale. And based on the response from this design I will make more of it. I will probably lengthen the handle by a 1/2" though because it needs to be slightly longer. PM me if you are interested. I really appreciate the positive feedback.:D
