Hello BF,

My name is John Landi, I have been lurking in the shadows in stealth mode for about six months or so. Like most (all) of you I share a passion for edged tools. I spoke a custom maker in January '07 at a gun show, I had always wanted to buy a couple of blanks and put handles on them. That one hour long conversation ignited something in me that I just couldn't put out. So a bought a few blanks, some hardwoods and went to work. Long story short I ended up wanting to do more and bought a Coote back in June, as well as some steel from Admiral. I ground out about 20 blades, they are back from HT and I am currently putting handles on them.

The following knife is a basic design that I draw up...I did use it for hunting season, so there are a few scratches on the blade and sheath already.

Specs:

Steel: 1095 from Admiral
Dimensions: 10*3/16*1 1/2
Scales: 1/4 inch red linen micarta
HT was done by Peters HT in Meadville, PA
Pins: 1/4 inch 304 SS
Epoxy: 2 Ton Devcon - roughed up a bit before application
Full flat grind, sharpened at 20 degrees per side
Sheath made by me, 9/10 ounce veg tan leather, all hardware purchased from tandy

Also, I just ordered an "etch-o-matic" to put my name on the batch - as I complete the rest I will post some for sale...true thanks for looking.

Nice work, John! I like the red slabs; nice visibility in the woods. Dark handle material.....Poof! Gone! :D

Outstanding job for the first knife. Great work from what I can see. And by the way - - - Welcome to Bladeforums. You will find great people here just like yourself. ---

Great first knife! The single finger grip handle and canvas (?) Micarta would go a long way keeping control of the knife when it's all slippery. Can't wait to see the other 19! Thanks for sharing,

Very cool blade there!! I like it.

Fellows,

Thanks for the kind words. It means a lot coming from this crowd.

Looking forward to posting my second. It is the same design as this one, same handles, but with a drop point blade. It needs a little finishing time...:)

Thanks again,

John

That is VERY good! Outstanding work; do us a favor; keep at it!!! And thanks a lot for sharing the picture!

Hey Dave,

It is red linen micarta. The finger groove is large enough to allow the user to have gloves on and still retain control of the knife. I have another (same blank) knife that I put 3/8 cocobolo on. The thicker handles feel even better then the 1/4 do. I will buy 3/8 micarta in the future - easier to do carving and contouring on but, still give you a meaty handle.

Thanks for looking.

Regards,
John
