I started this knife with a WIP thread (here) but after returning from the heat treat it was a lot of stop and go and fixing mistakes and such so I stopped the documentation.

I finally finished my first knife last week. I pretty happy with how it turned out. It's quite comfortable to use and the heat treat was done really well (not by me) as I had it out chopping today and there is no noticeable effect to the edge.

-1095 steel. stock removal from a 1/4" bar (3/16"+ at the ricasso finished)
-11" blade guard to tip, 16 3/4" OAL
-balance point is about 1 1/2" in front of the guard.
-416SS fittings and pin
-Walnut handle ( a nice scrap from work)
-Vinegar etch to bring out the differential HT line

1st knife ???? Seriously, FIRST knife ????? Damn ! That's some extra ordinary talent you got there dude. Very nice job !

I like how you did the clip, looks sharpened too Handle would fit nicley in hand. 1st Blade, WOW!

Thanks! Yes this is my first knife. Unless you count grinding out ninja throwing stars out of circular saw blades about 25 years ago. :p

Damn, dude  that is one HECK of a first blade! You should be very pleased with what you have accomplished.

That is incredible work, I'm astonished that it's your first. You have some serious talent.

Way to go. That is the best looking first knife I have ever seen. you keep making them that clean and you will be the new kid on the block.

Quite incredible actually. Especially the handle and guard. Seems to be the area where most new makers struggle the most.
Of course you can't judge but so much from a photo, however looks to be as good or perhaps better than some maker's knives who have been at it a while.

The sheath is impressive as well. Nothing fancy, however very well executed for a first sheath.

I agree with the others. That's an INCREDIBLE first knife!!

Thanks a lot everyone!! It's really encouraging to hear this. The photos do hide a few of the areas I had troubles with but I learned a lot from making this first knife.
Others' work-in-progress threads and books were really helpful but at least for me, I don't really learn except by doing.

The sheath isn't my first..:o I've been making them for guys up here in Canada for a little while now. This was just a quick user sheath I made so I can carry the knife out to do a little yard work. I added my preferred carry system for large knives (with a little flair) the other night.

Tools used for this knife.
- Viele 1"x42" belt grinder
- 4"x36" belt grinder (for part of the handle and flattening the blade)
- assorted files
- lots of sandpaper
- dremel

Can't wait to get a 2"x72" grinder and later try forging.

Here's a couple photos from this morning.

I am not usually a bowie advocate, but this one really appeals to me. Incredible first knife and sheath!
