My First Knife

Great job! Looks good, especially for your first.
I wish there was a maker close to me to hang out with.

I'd buy it if I didn't just buy a Junglas, a custom chopper, an ESKABAR, and a Jeep recently...

If I were to start making knives, I'm sure my first one wouldn't look nearly that good. Nice work. And +1 to what Tknife said. If I lived close to Ray, or Rick, or Christof, or any of several others, they'd get tired of me real quick.

Nice! Outstanding..... you are hooked, I know you are!

He won't own up to it, but Ray is an excellent teacher "bad habits" and all. I love working in his shop. Mark too.

YES, enter it in the contest!

Hooked is right. Now I want to make more. I have all kinds of wood at home waiting to be attached to a knife, too.

Ray is great to work with. I only wish I could come remotely close to what he can do effortlessly. But I do feel guilty for hanging around his shop too much; it's his living, and I took up a good chunk of his time. He watched me the whole time, giving instruction, and touching up things here and there.

Yeah, I think he's hooked... Isn't that great? I enjoy teaching anyone who really wants to learn. I really don't know much and I'm self taught so I have bad habits. This makes me not the best teacher but I know how to make a knife and I can pass on what I know. You only get to make your first knife once, and it's an honor being able to be the one who helped get it done. :)

Don't worry about taking up my time. It was fun. Besides, I still finished those three knives today after you left.

Great job on this one. Like Ray said, keep this one. Not only your first, but it has Ray's approval stamp as well. :p

I still have my first knife but honestly I don't even think my most recent turned out that nice. Good job, and Ray you underestimate your teaching ability, John's natural talent aside, of course :)

This is a little off topic, but is the 1080 steel easier to work than say 1095 or O1?

Ray and I were talking about this when I was at his place last weekend. Quick answer is it is a bit more forgiving as far as timing when quenching and heat treating. At least that was my understanding.
