HI everyone,

I just completed my first knife!!! The blade is O1 tool steel, 9" OAL, an the blade is 4 1/2" long, heat treated by Peter's Heat Treating. The scales are Brazilian Walnut, and I made the mosaics myself (not perfect - my first try as well). The sheath is made from 9 oz leather, hand stitched and stained antique brown. Everything was made completely with files and sand paper (except for a drill press) - I only got my grinder after I'got the blade back form heat treating. The blade is polished down to 2500 grit (no buffer, yet, so I can't get it super shiny )

Thanks for looking, and any comments/critique are always welcomed!

I made my first knife at a knife making class with a wilton 2 x 72" grinder and it looks like crap. You have set the bar too high. Hell of a job!!!

Excellent work. Once you get your grinder going the skys the limit. The sheath design and leather work is very slick.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Humble beginnings, but beginnings none the less.

Gene keep at it. Now that I have a grinder, I think you can screw up a lot more efficiently with it than with files and sandpaper. I ground out a few more blades with the grinder (4, to be exact) that took a little bit of "love" with the file to get the first two nice and flat. It gets better the more I do it.

really nice job, and dont be surprised if you have folks asking you do do a few sheaths for them, i loved the simplicity and quality of you leatherwork too, awesome package! now if i can just figure how to finally post one too!, hehe

Beautiful for any knife and especially well done for a first.

I highly recommend getting or making and electro etcher. That knife deserves to have your name or logo on it. And as I'm sure has been mentioned on here many times. DO NOT SELL YOUR FIRST!!! You will cherish that as a family heirloom forever.

Well done!

An other nice example that a beautifull knife can be made with handtools only

Well done!

I like lookig at first knives it sort of makes me feel a bit better about ones I try to make, but lately seeing first kmives like this , Just WOW:cool:

What a great first knife! You have a lot of skill and talent from another craft I suspect. It shows through your work!

Thanks for all the compliments, everyone!

Grant, I'm pretty much a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to working with my hands, but I do have a lot of experience with wood and models (the miniature airplane and car type, not the fashion type ;) ). I had formal woodwork training throughout high school, and have made a few designer cabinets on special order - once off type of stuff. My grandfather was an absolute master with his hands, and I guess I'm blessed that I inherited some of his skills.

Thanks again for looking and your comments everyone!

Outstanding First effort, it is unusuall to see such clean and crisp finish from a first build. Keep at it you have talent.
