Should be coming back from Darrin today after hardening. I'm sure he had a good laugh when he got it last week. I'm eager to get working on the edge when it arrives. I did a search but didn't really find any straight forward how to's on putting the final edge on and sharpening. Here is the blade before HT, just need a little guidance for the next step.

Looks good, I start the bevel with a belt grinder and then switch to stones. Lots of ways to put on the edge. What equipment do you have?

Man that was weird for me too, putting the first edge on a new knife. All I can say is try to match the bevel on a knife you already have that is sharp, like the width and look of it. Also on the craftsman use a very light touch. For me it goes too fast to be able to see a burr form so I just get it kind of sharp, finish on a stone, then strop.

Considering what you have access to I would start with a new 150 then finish up on a stone & strop. The next time you buy belts get a couple in 220, 400, & 800 for sharpening. You also might want to get a felt or leather belt & some green compound for buffing/stropping the burr off. Like S2F said, go slow with a light touch and be careful to keep the blade from overheating.

I use DMT diamond sharpeners for that. The folding, diafold ones.

Here's my first finished knife. Not sure what style you would call it? Made a few mistakes on the grinding. The next one will be better.

I like it. Nice general purpose knife that looks like it would be just as happy spreading condiments and cutting things at lunch as doing some light wood work. For a first it certainly shows some style and awareness of curves and shape.

Very nice first knife, heck thats nice for #20. The only things I see that you need to work on are pin hole spacing and putting a radius on the front of the scales. But thats just cosmetic stuff, that should serve you well for many years. Now go make #2. :D
