Happy New Year, everyone. Here are a few photos of my first knives. I made both of these blades with 2" x 1/8" CPM 154. The scales are stabilized box elder burl from Bad Dogs and the bolsters are black paper Micarta. The blades are 5-1/4" and 6-1/4" with handles at about 4-1/2" each. I made these primarily using a Rockwell 1" x 42" grinder that I found on craigslist. I owe special thanks to Steve Rollert at Dove Knives in Keenesburg, Colorado who helped me out with an eleventh-hour heat-treat for these two so that I could have them finished in time for Christmas. Let me know what you think, and thanks for looking.

Very nice.

I think it is great you used CPM 154 for those.

It is a great steel and for your first knives a wise choice. So many try to work with the least expensive steel, but not you :)

great looking first knives!!

question: how did you keep the epoxy out of your filework or did you color the epoxy black and let it fill the voids and just sand as normal?

Thanks, Redd. I used T-88 structural epoxy for the handles, pigmented black, so the filework is filled in. These are meant to be every-day use kitchen knives, so I wouldn't want any voids anywhere, especially not behind the scales.

Very nice knives, and a good choice of materials. Now i know where that piece of blue box elder on bad dogs that i missed went to, or at least it sure looks a lot like it. You made better use of it than i could anyway haha, good work.

Thanks bishop I also use T-88 and plan on doing some file work for the one I am working on now for my father in law. I will look into how to pigment it.
