First time using Massdrop.
signed up.
Joined the drop.
After some time, got an email stating "Yay!. We've got enough users for the order." Sweet, I thought.
Bank account was charged.
10-days later get an email stating "Sorry, the manufacturer can't supply the knives. We'll refund your money with an extra $5 coupon."
Damn, I thought. WTF?

Is this normal?

This seems a little silly to get people to sign up for something when they don't even know if the manufacturer can satisfy the order.

Thanks.

Which knife was involved in the drop? I know there have been issues with some Spyderco drops where there was a disjoint in communications about price and production quotas.

I've bought several knives through Massdrop and have had a good experience overall.

Currently I'm following how the pocket clip problems on the Ferrum Forge/WE/Massdrop Falcon play out. Apparently the new Ferrum Forge/WE/Massdrop Crux are hitting the first purchasers and the clip on that has the same problems as the clip on the Falcon. So far Massdrop has been eerily silent about the clip problems, but I hope to see them get involved with a fix. There are droves of purchasers seeking aftermarket clip options for the Falcon/Crux and that's just not right with a brand new knife.

This will be a real litmus test to see how Massdrop responds to a problem on a knife they accept warranty service on...

It's normal to happen occasionally. I've ordered alot and don't think it's happened to me but Ive seen drops it happened to others in. Those people get salty but it happens sometimes. Massdrop is at the mercy of the vendors.

I was in a couple drops that were delayed longer than a month. That was upsetting but the drop I was in was an amazing deal which doesn't happen often on knives. So I stuck with it.

It's not the perfect platform. Buy great when they have deals. It would be better if bladeforums got together with Massdrop so they could let us vote as a site on knives that we like as a community. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that atm.they are not a vendor supporting bladeforums.

welcome to mass drop, you'll get used to it. i buy knives here now instead. their voting thing almost seems like a sham. but they do have interesting things now and then, but usually only a bit cheaper than amazon or the like but you'll have to wait months for delivery.

i'm waiting on the crux and the gent, my other 2 knives from mass drop came without delay.

will you try again on mass drop?

In what way is it a "sham?"

I have bought all sorts of stuff off the site and find it to be a fantastic value nine times out of ten. Their collaborations are also top notch.

all the really good things voted for never get dropped.. seems like the same stuff over and over again, as if there was left over inventory. but i understand certain things probably won't ever show up but that was the whole idea, enough votes and they go "try" to get it..

i know new things get dropped, i still shop there. i don't mind waiting months to save $2-$15 on something i don't know if i need

Yeah Massdrop is for sure not a "I need it now, I need the newest" kind of a thing. I'm sure they bid on clearouts and other dusty stuff and sometimes the deals fall apart. I've heard it said that Amazon has lower pricing but not for us in Canada. Also with Amazon you can wind up loosing warranty coverage or in the worst case getting a fake.

For someone up in Canada Massdrop is a source for serviceable gear at a reasonable price. All I do is watch a bunch of categories and if I see something interesting I cross check the price and order if I really need it. I do vote in the polls and use the request buttons but not with any expectations that those will work out for me in a reasonable time frame.

One person may find paying 100% in advance followed by a long wait for 10% under Amazon to be other than "fantastic." Others? Well, obviously lots of folks are happy. It's a wide world. Their money and their time. I have little time to get hot about matters pf subjective choice. Ought to be other thongs to.

I bought a knife through MD. Seemed OK to me. Not like I live there. Not to many drops for a puukko. :(

I do see that often said and felt about mass drop.. then I see the complaints about the shipping prices. You are always welcome to have things shipped to me and I will ship it to you, not sure how much cheaper that will make it, if at all, but
:D:thumbsup:

I was thinking how interesting it would be to see a puukko on mass drop and so i checked, turns out there were 2! hah

There are a lot of collaborations that you can only get on MD so the idea that it is 10% off Amazon is an incorrect and misleading statement. Sure, some deals are better than others but to call it a sham is still a bit unreasonable.

Massdrop is often a hit or miss, but when it's a hit its pretty damn good. Got my Kizer, and my Mcusta Tsushi sword from them. Saved at least $60 on each of them vs. buying in Canada. Honestly, biggest pain of being Canadian..... all the fun stuff is god damn expensive
