After much drooling and flip-flopping between the RC-4 and RC-3, I finally realized that I will eventually have to get them both. But, for now here is my first RAT. Love this knife so far! :D

nice looking knife. make sure that she gets a lot of work, my rats are getting kind of bored and out of shape at the moment without any regular workout

Yeah I have the Tan RC-4 on my belt right now in fact and I used it to cut down a small "tree" of sorts or it may have been more of a bush and it was still shaving sharp after going through several 1 1/2in branches with some efficiency. Great knife for the size and I carried it all day while walking around the local outlet mall in this great 70 degree weather and being a 4in blade It was great on the belt with the para cord and hid well under the button up shirt I was wearing.

Thanks everyone. I took the RC-4 out last night and used it to cut some kindling and small wood for a fire. Started the fire with a firesteel, got it burning well, then put it out. I’m going to start doing it fairly regularly. I figure it's good practice and when you need it is not the time to be perfecting those skills!

Yes, good practice.

I do that too, and I try different tinders while doing so. (Only I use the Izula for it mostly, cause that is the blade I have on me at all times - so chances are that I might only have the Izula to work with when I really need to do that.)

The coming RC-6es with the sheath survival kit is looking pretty tempting. I need to tell the wife I’m getting her something really nice for Christmas then start leaving pics of the RC-6 kit lying around the house. But I would like to make a neck mini-kit out of the Izula. :D

As a fellow RC-3 / -4 flip-flopper, can I ask what finally swayed you, and would you make the same choice again?

Man, I just can't decide between these Rats.

Stupid mortgage....

I actually ordered both and returned the RC-3. I knew I wanted to get my hands on both of them because I’d most likely end up with them both anyway, like I said.

The pros of one were the “cons” of the other. Thinner blade RC-3 is probably better for slicing, thicker blade of the RC-4 might be better for heavier use, and so on. Even after looking at them both side by side I couldn’t decide.

I finally decided that I wanted a general woods knife, not a knife specifically for dressing deer or anything, because I’ve got a good knife for that, so I went with the RC-4. It’s only been 3 days, but yes I would make the same decision again. I also like the sheath of the RC-4 a little bit better than the one that came with the RC-3.

Decide what you’re going to use it for and base your decision off that (if that’s any help). The RC-4 is not a big knife. You could comfortably wear it for most all outdoor activities and forget it’s there. The RC-3 is a very nice knife, but since I thought I wanted a slightly thicker blade for my intended use, I chose the RC-4.

I feel your pain, if I want the RC-3 (or the 6 or an Izula, haha) I’m going to have to make it a Christmas present. A man needs a good knife (or a few)!

It is. I'm wanting a good all-around, woodsy knife, something that can do everything from fine carving, to shelter building, to fire prep, to game prep -- the proverbial "one knife in the woods." And if it made coffee, too, well that'd be just great. That's my dilemma here; the RC-3 and RC-4 are both, by all accounts, great for all this stuff (except the coffee part, which is a SERIOUS design flaw, IMO).

That said, I do usually like to go with as light/small a knife as I can get get away with (that still fits my big mitts), so I'm leaning heavily towards the RC-3. Just wandered if there was something about the RC-4 that I hadn't considered. Thanks!

See, now that's exactly what I've been trying to explain to the wife! It's a need, right? I mean, we're talking knives here, so OF COURSE it's a need.

But she's all like, "blah, blah, blah ... needs versus wants ... blah, blah, blah ... responsible adult ... blah, blah, blah ... pay the bills ... blah, blah, blah ... food in the house ..."

I finally told her, I said, "Look! I'm a man. I have manly needs. And one of those needs is a new knife. Now, I'm getting one, and that's final."

Well, those weren't my exact words.

I think my exact words were, "Yes, dear."

But she knew what I meant.

I could totally tell. :grumpy:

I decided on the RC4 for my first RAT knife. Haven't pulled the trigger yet though.

I'm not sure what I'm waiting on:)
