I picked up this Frost Cutlery knife a little while ago. It wasnt anything special so I figured I would "re-imagine" it.
The handle was a nice enough piece of wood but it was not pinned and poorly attached. The guard and handle were back about 1/16th of an inch and had gaps in the epoxy.
I removed the guard and handle and sketched what I thought I could make from the blade.
I was going to remove the original tang but decided to keep it to pin into the new handle.
I attached some pieced of of oak I had (hardwood flooring) put a pin through the factory tang and epoxied the whole thing up. Unfortunately I failed to get pix of the rough handle.
I also picked up a piece of cow belly from American Science and Surplus to make a sheath. I made my own lacing from trimmings and ran a bit of epoxy down the back fold to keep the tip from digging into the leather.
Heres the result of my efforts.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
My main questions are:
How much shaping is done before attaching the handle?
Does the leather of the sheath stretch or tighten with age? (mine seems to fit looser than when made but sheath seems to hold its shape better)
Thanx for your consideration.
