I just got my first real knife, it's mod cqd.
It occurs to me now that I will need to sharpen this thing someday, any suggestions on a sharpening system?
Thanks

I use crock sticks made by Gatco. I ordered them from The Knifecenter. Alot of people use the Spyderco triangle sharpening system. Both work well and are readily available online...Ed.

Wow, great knife to start with. I have the CQD MK II (smaller, window breaker instead of secondary blade), and I love it. cpirtle and Eric Blair and a couple other guys around here have them too and love them. Definately a great folder.

For sharpening, a lot of people recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker. It's easy to use, but it works a little better than systems like Lansky. Plus you can sharpen serrations, recurves, etc more easily.

One other option, though, and one I recommend, is to pick up a decent benchstone, and practice on a knife you don't care about or can replace cheaply. I practice on an Opinel. There's nothing to compare to freehand sharpening. After awhile, all you'll have to do is sharpen it up really good one time, and then just strop it from time to time to bring back the edge.

hi harly,
i was NEVER able to put an edge on any of my knives. after they got dull,i just got another one to use.

then i went to ag russell and picked up a ceramic rod sharpener. its two ceramic rods that fit on a mount (the mount is a long, slender board that also stores the rods when not in use),when they're mounted the make a "V" shape. all you do is hold your blade at a ninety degree angle and pull downward, like your trying to slice a piece of the ceramic off.
it does a great job,all my knives will now shave (im surprised how sharp my opinel #9 gets!

) its almost foolproof. it sells for about thirty dollars, and my only regret is that i didnt buy one a LONG time ago.

My only experience is with the Razor Edge Systems Pro Kit and it's much better than I could have imagined. Very exceptional system. My personal knives have a true razor edge.
