My first Sayoc lesson

In my limited exposure to Tuhon Chris Sayoc, I was really impressed. Based on my few observations, Sayoc Kali does not appear to favor "defanging the snake" and other limb destruction techniques as much as some other FMAs. Tuhon Chris' style seems to focus more on attacks to the neck, abdomen, and other vital areas. I'm sure that you will learn a lot from this fine group.

Tom Kier (A really cool guy) put it to me this way, "We don't defang the snake, we behead the snake..."

Sounds like a viable alternative to me.

I'm glad you had a good first experience with Sayoc Kali.
I assume you're training with Guro Colin Ryan, he is an excellent teacher and practitioner in Sayoc Kali as well as a number of other disciplines, he also has a colorful past in real life combat situations. If you want to hear some good war stories ask him about his days at "Shooters" back in Philly !!
Good luck

Don,
I have had a busy last four months. I was hired by Paramount Pictures to work on a movie called "The Hunted" starring Tommy Lee Jones, Benicio del Toro and Connie Nielson. I needed to train the actors and stuntmen as well as choreograph the scenes that have anything to do with blades or knife work. Of course I was able to bring some other instructors (Rafael Kayanan and Gordan Katz) out to help in what turned out to be a sizable job. It was going well, when in the middle of June, Benicio broke his arm badly while shooting one of the knifefights. We are now on hold while he recovers. Well that's why I've been gone, no computer on location.
I'm back for a while.
I missed you guys.:)

Tom, you run out of stuntmen to play with? ;)

No I still need to train those guys in Sept, but I can use the brake from that group of guys. They all know just enough to think they know it all. There like a bunch of seminar trained martial artist, if you know what I mean. Not all of them, but enough that it can be frustrating.

Hee hee hee...hey look, as long as they get "Tom Kier" and "Sayoc Kali" spelled right (hopefully credit will be given) don't sweat the small stuff.

They do think they know everything, look at how they run their pieholes on talk shows about weapons in general all the time... what a perfect "smileyface" to convey that feeling...

Hope it´s ok to chime in with my question, does anyone (Tom?) know of Sayoc Kali teachers in Europe?
Tom, way cool job. Make sure you and your style get credited correctly (as Don pointed out), the media biz can be a bit "tricky" and deceptive sometimes.
When I saw Del Torro on TV at the Oscars night, I couldn´t believe it. Only knew him from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (great movie, some scenes where he´s fumbling around with a Buck 110 and a Kabar), and the guy looked like half-dead at the Oscars. Sorry to hear he´s broken his arm, though.
Sidewinder, have fun with the training. I wish I could train with more competent people (Sayoc people are high on my list) here in Austria, there´s really not much going on FMA-wise.

Hello Sidewinder,
Congratulations on your first Sayoc Kali class! I am sure you, like myself will continue loving the training. Hello Guro Tom, thanks for the awesome work at Sama-Sama.(My brain still hurts with all the information) I hope to catch up with you again soon. Anyone in the New England area, come up to Manchester NH, on August 4th and 5th for a Sayoc Kali seminar, with Tuhon Chris Sayoc. Email me if you are interested(airyu@hotmail.com).

Sidewinder,

Congratulations. The smartest thing one can do when starting on the path of the blade is to find a truly skilled teacher of bladefighting (not as easy as it would seem) It sounds like you've done that.

I really liked what you said about bladework being "very sophisticated and thought provoking". I still find it so even after all this time. The more one studies, the more layers to the onion that one discovers. I wish you much success in your training.

Tom,

Its nice to hear from you again. I was excited to read about your latest project. Does this mean that there will finally be a movie that accurately depicts bladework? I can't wait!

BTW, are you or any of your guys going to fight at Tuhon Leo's Ultimate Kali Challenge in Manila in November? If so- assuming that my wife doesn't go into labor that week  - I look forward to meeting and possibly having the opportunity to cross 'blades' with you guys.

Peace and good training,

Mario

Hello Gaucho,
Nice to see you posting here! Are you going to AMOK! summer camp? I can't make it, but I just got back from Tuhon Sayoc's Sama- Sama. That was a great event. I am jealous about you heading to the Philippines!
All the best
Steve

Hi Steve,

How are ya? I hope that all is well.

I will be at the Camp on Sa****ay, training and hanging with the boys and assisting Po with the Pekiti Tersia Daga segment. Plus, it'll give me a chance to learn more Harimau Silat from Guro Mike Williams, and it'll be my first opportunity to meet and train with Arthur Sennott of Systema. So, it should be a great day all-around. I'm sorry you won't be there.

It was an honor for me to be asked to fight in Manila. Po's been working me hard and I've had a chance to train and spar with some terrific fighters like Batikan Randy Hodges.:D

Best Regards,

Mario

Well, we've established that "Sa****ay" can no longer be said because it has T-U-R-D in it. WOW. I have had some bad weekends, nothing to warrant that degree of involvement from a censor bot.

How about SAYOC/AMOK "tribes"/schools in the Balt. & Wash DC areas??

Sounds kinda interesting for those of us folks
THAT HAVE TO ATTEND SEMINARS

because theres no local FMA in Hillbilly land:eek:

Hello Pete,
Check both Tuhon Sayoc's website and Professor Sotis's website, for a list of active schools and instructors. Sayoc.com, and knifefighting.com respectively, offer a wealth of information. If you have any further questions about instructors drop me a line and I'll see who I can dig up for you.
Train Hard, it is the way!
