My first Schrade fixed blade

Okay, I'm ready for the jibes I'm going to get for this one. I bought one of those "unfinished knives" from the closing of Schrade. I couldn't find much about it including a search of the forums here. It was supposedly made for Colt and intended to be a Sam Colt commemorative. The finished knives that I was able to see pictures of had engraving on the blade and came in a wooden display case. One seller of a finished original dated it to 1972.

The knife I bought is unmarked and unfinished. Does anyone know anything about this particular knife?

A fully engraved one sold on eBay yesterday, without the original display box, but with an aftermarket sheath:

You done good these are indeed Schrades and it looks like from the pic it is finished, what is missing???. Just so you know the Colts did not have tang markings either. That is because they ( Colt wanted them that way ). Ruger did the same thing with a PH-2 in stag and the only marking was a Ruger shield in the handle. The colt versions had an etch and I believe it was an electro etch. Added to knives like you have as they needed them. The sheath is not an after market sheath but the original used with the colt and the one you have. They were available with this sheath or a display or both. If you are not happy with your knife let me know. Many were sold just as yours is. Now Schrade made several editions in this bowie pattern. The first edition in this pattern was ( I believe The Texas Ranger version ) then there were several others as well as special limited eds for raffles for various organizations. The WWII centerpiece was this pattern with a black chrome blade with real( Not electro ) etch in 14 K depicting the sinking of the USS Arizona and stag handles. There were also other variations. The nice thing about this knife is that over the years they have become favorite carry knives for hunters it is quite impressive when you show it around at camp and not having the etch allows that. The etched versions are usually under glass in someones house. Your knife is not only good for show it is good to go, big as it is it will dress an animal as good as any 152 or 15-OT. Nice one LT

There will certainly be no jibes about that knife from this quarter. I like Schrade fixed blades, and particularly the large ones like your Bowie. While it certainly is not a city knife, it is a very useful and handsome design. I wish I had one, but all of the ones I have seen were, as LT pointed out, embellished. And expensive, at least to me. And owning a Schrade "Sample" , "Prototype", or custom, even an unfinished knife or a goof is no sin in my book. It actually is a plus. I would much rather see these special knives go into the hands of someone who appreciates them than to an investor (though the two are not mutually exclusive).

I mispoke about the knife being unfinished because I'm clearly in the dark on this one. I thought it was unfinished because it didn't have the Colt engraving. I had no idea that the same pattern was used for so many different things or that it was ever available in a plain state. The knife is new and comes with the sheath but no box. I just bought it today, so it will be a couple of days before I have it in my hands. As always, you guys are a wealth of information.

You got a great knife there, and our LT gave you some equally great info. Let us know all about it when you get the thing. I don't have one of these myself but would love to own one.

Nice knife redshanks.....no jibes...

Oh.....

Phil, you've got to try harder than that..... :D

Bill, are you saying that was a disguised grovel? A "grovel incognito"? A "stealth grovel"? I think it was just a very mild passive case of "Blade envy" like I have for the 171UH Pro Hunter.

That one has eluded me, mostly due to the prices they command like the Colt Bowie. I guess I am more in the league of "good user" buyer for those patterns, though they seem to be uncommon in that condition.

If you would like to see a classic example of a well developed TRUE grovel, search back through the threads to where I was looking for a 160OT Mountain Lion. Heck, I dang near got an award for that one ! :D

Fixed blades are best, folders are handy!

Codger!!

I would never imply that our esteemed forum member, textoothpk, would grovel in any way, shape, or form.....would eye? :o

I do remember your classic lesson to all of us....I bet you were picking "Gravel from your Grovel" out of various intimate places for days.....

I have tried every type of grovel I know as it pertains to the Legendary "Unbloodied", exquisitely handled, Schrade/D'Holder.....and have fallen as though someone cut Rapunzel's hair as I climbed the tower...sigh... :(

Oh well...live and learn. I hope redshanks enjoys his nice knife.

You boys give a new meaning to the word tight. Reach in and get what you want I would rather die oweing on it than never have had it. I have lots of buyers who owe me and some sellers I have owed. However win lose or draw I won't complain about it.

They don't take your house away immediately for taxes or morgage, and there are lots of people who will give loans. Man if you have an itch scratch it. It isn't like you were looking at a pre 1920 Case zipper auto in clasp that you might have to search for a while to find. These ones you lust for are all around. It is a better investment than a night on the town, or a bottle of whiskey you kill on Saturday night. Hell it might be a better investment than IBM or GM.

Or as I always say in a poker game throw it in boys throw it in lets make a nice pile. I know we have at least one member here who is an expert on Dees knives why don't you see what he says. I do not want to say who it is but if you email me I will give you a hint just in case you cannot figure it out.

It is better to have loved and lost than never loved st all . A whole lot better same thing with anything you want. LT

"Down goes Frazier!!.....Down goes Frazier!!"

I have been KO'd by the best right here on the Schrade Knives Collectors Forum..... :foot:

Thank you for that trip to the woodshed LT.....I feel a great burden has been lifted from me (sort of like when a better poker player cuts you up) and I'll strive to eliminate groveling in the foreseeable future.

I'm gonna go ask my wife for a raise in my allowance right now! Pleeeeeeeeze ( oops :o ) wish me buena suerte.
