Well, I finally bit the bullet and made it to my first Gun/Knife show. I am not a gun guy at all, but the Quad City Gun and Knife Show was held this weekend, and I was bored, so I went. There were lots of guns I don't know anything about. Not so many knives, unfortunately. A lot of CRAP was abound, with tons of "Japanese" swords as well as the other Home Shopping Netword assortment of crap. Lots of bayonets, but I am not a collector, so I can't tell you what pricing was like. I saw a good number of old Marbles (overpriced) and new ones (overpriced). Lots of Ontario stuff, a smidgeon of Spyderco, lots of Benchmade stuff. Most everything was priced REALLY high. I saw some decent custom work, and a few old EK's, Blackjacks, a Tommy Lee damascus sub-hilt fighter, a beautiful tomahawk with curly maple and siler inlay (they wanted $800!), etc. Not too bad for a 95% gun/4% "knife"/1% knife show!

My only purchase was an Ontario Black Wind katana that I got NIB for $40. Seemed like a pretty good deal. Anyway, it was interesting, and nothing like a real knife show, I'm sure. I also spotted a NIB Benchmade butterfly of some type. They wanted $150. They had two obvious, total crap, cheap-ass fakes that were stamped with the BM butterfly/bali-song logo, and they were willing to take $100 for either of them. Yeah, right! I definitely knew 10x more about knives than the most knowledgeable fellow there! It was fun, though.

Sounds great. Glad you had a good time. I've been to lots of gun shows, toy shows, doll shows, record shows, antique shows, reptile shows, and probably plenty more shows than I would care to remember. But I have yet to attend a real live knife show. Hopefully I will catch the Atlanta Blade Show in June (which happens to fall on my birthday).

It is a sad fate but knives normally take a back seat at the "gun & knife" shows. If you are like me, you love them both. But to see the best knives go to the Blade Show in Atlanta or the Southeastern Custom Knife Show in Winston-Salem. Once you attend one, you'll count he days till the next. It is at these shows that you'll see why knife makers are really artist.

Greetings,Chiro57.(Fellow Iowan) I too started going to gun shows back in january, looking for a gotta have knife.I went to the Davenport gun show 1-14-00 aprox. I can relate to what You found, but I find Cedar Rapids show better for 1 reason,a dealer from Straight River Knife Inc. was there.SRK had something for everyone, for Me Sebenzas.Prices were a little higher on factory knives, compaired to internet, but much cheeper than the Davenport show knife dealers IMHO. SRK gave me a break on a decorated sebie at the Dubuque gun show.Made my day & paid for a meal an gas with the savings. SRK has a large inventory of nice quality knives factory-costom. SRK will be at the Cedar Rapids gun show 3-10,11,12-00 Hawkeye Downs fyi.Any great knife shops in the Quad? Good Luck at the shows...Bill

Hey Chiro,
I hope you are not too burned on knife shows to come up here to Wisconsin for the Badger show in a few weeks! I think you will have a much better experience.

The QC Gun & Knife show was just a warm-up, man! I have National Boards Part III the week before the Badger show (they're on my birthday, of course!

) and I have to get in touch with the guy I was going to go with, so if everything works out I will still go. I'm excited about attending an actual knife show, although I won't have much money to spend!

As long as we're on the subject, I'll throw out what will be the first of many invitations to all BF members and their friends to join the TKC-L crowd at the Badger Show for ribs, beer, show-and-tell, and more beer on Saturday night at Damon's, across the parking lot from the Holiday Inn.
